Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook and review. Open with the opening comparison image showing a single-celled organism and a large multicellular organism, then ask, “How can both be alive if one has only one cell?” Students silently write one idea, then share with a partner. Invite two or three responses and remind students that all living organisms are made of cells.

Students cut or separate the organism cards, read the short descriptions, and sort each example into unicellular or multicellular. For every card, partners record one piece of evidence, such as the number of cells, specialized cell types, or how life functions are carried out. Circulate and ask, “What information on the card supports your classification?” and “Would size alone be reliable evidence?”

  4. 17–24 min · Venn diagram comparison. Students complete the Venn diagram on the organism classification cards and evidence organizer. Require at least two differences and two similarities, including ideas about structure, function, and complexity. Use the Venn diagram model and discussion prompts to model one comparison, such as “A unicellular organism has one cell that performs all life functions, while a multicellular organism has many cells that may have different jobs.” Students compare their diagram with another pair and revise one idea if they hear stronger evidence.

  5. 24–28 min · Evidence-based discussion. Display the claim-and-evidence prompt: “Multicellular organisms are more complex than unicellular organisms because…” Students use their Venn diagrams to prepare a two-sentence response. Partners take turns stating a claim and supporting it with evidence from one classification card or the comparison text. Select two students to share, prompting classmates to identify the evidence used.

  6. 28–30 min · Exit check. Return to the final review and exit prompt. Students answer on the bottom of the organism classification cards and evidence organizer: “Choose one organism. Classify it as unicellular or multicellular and explain how its cells carry out life functions.” Collect the worksheet to assess understanding and use responses to plan the next lesson.
