Lesson Structure

1. Opening Activity (5 minutes)

  • "Which is longer, a week or a month?"
  • "How many weeks are usually in a month?"

Step 4: Monthly Variations

  • Show cards representing months with different lengths (“30 days,” “31 days,” “28 days”). Explain that February is special because it has fewer days.

3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Activity 1: Building a Month Puzzle

  • Give each student a “Month Puzzle” handout. Students will cut the puzzle pieces (each piece representing one week) and arrange them to form a full month.
  • Discuss how they needed 4 puzzle pieces for 4 weeks but were left with a little "extra space" for the remaining days.

Activity 2: Compare & Record

  • Hand each student a small whiteboard or paper. Ask simple prompts like:
    • “How many weeks are in a month?”
    • "Which is longer: 2 weeks or 1 month?" (Encourage them to draw a calendar to help visualize.)
    • "If you know there are 7 days in a week, how many days are in 4 weeks?"
    • "Do all months have the same number of weeks?"

4. Closing Activity (5 minutes)

Game: “Month Detective”

  • Use the classroom calendar to play a fast-paced game.
  • Teacher says prompt clues, like:
    • "I'm thinking of a month that has only 28 days. What is it?" (Answer: February).
    • "What is the total number of days in 3 weeks?" (Answer: 21).
    • "Which is longer, one week or one month?" (Answer: One month).
