Complex Sentence Craft

Objective

Students will identify and construct complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions and manage subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and correct punctuation within complex sentences. This lesson aligns with TEKS for 7th-grade English Language Arts grammar standards and incorporates grade-appropriate editing skills.

Time Breakdown (5 minutes)

1. Opening & Objective (30 seconds)

Briefly introduce the concept of complex sentences focusing on subordinating conjunctions (because, although, since, unless). State that the class will explore how to build and edit complex sentences for clarity and grammatical accuracy.

2. Quick Interactive Activity (2 minutes)

• Present 3 simple sentences on the board.
• Invite 3 different students one at a time to combine two of the simple sentences using a subordinating conjunction to make a complex sentence. Example:
• Simple sentences: “The student finished work.” “Because it was due.”
• Combined: “The student finished work because it was due.”
• As students share, quickly highlight the subject-verb agreement and correct punctuation (use of comma when the subordinating clause begins the sentence).
• Display grammar symbol cards if available to reinforce Montessori tactile learning.

3. Guided Editing Exercise (2 minutes)

• Provide each student with a pre-prepared complex sentence containing deliberate grammatical errors related to:
• Subject-verb agreement
• Incorrect verb tense
• Missing commas with clauses
• Pronoun-antecedent disagreement
• Students will work silently to identify and mark corrections directly on the sentence strips or notebooks.

• Select 2-3 students to read their corrected sentence and explain one correction they made.
