Creator and Creation

Overview

Students will read and discuss Genesis 1, focusing on the sequence of the creation days, God as Creator, and why the created world matters. The lesson uses short informational reading, teacher-guided discussion, and a multimedia-supported retell.

Learning intentions

• Students will identify the main idea and key details in Genesis 1 using the sequence of creation days.
• Students will explain how God is presented as Creator in Genesis 1.
• Students will summarize Genesis 1 clearly using academic vocabulary and relevant details.
• Students will use multiple text and visual elements to strengthen understanding and retelling.

Success criteria

• I can name what God created on each day in order (Day 1–Day 6).
• I can state that God is Creator and describe at least one way the text shows God’s power and purpose.
• I can summarize Genesis 1 in a few sentences using key details.
• I can use vocabulary words correctly when speaking or writing about creation.

Lesson structure (45 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Hook and connect. Teacher displays a simple “Creation Days” visual (six numbered panels) and asks: “What do you notice about the order?” Students turn-and-talk about why order matters in stories and information.

2. 5–12 min · Read for central idea. Teacher reads aloud Genesis 1 (teacher-selected grade-appropriate text portion) with pauses; students follow along silently and highlight repeated ideas like “God said” and “and God saw that it was good.” Students respond to a quick check: “What is this passage mostly about?” (main idea).

3. 12–22 min · Direct instruction: sequence of creation. Teacher models completing a “Day-by-Day” chart:

• Day 1: light and darkness
• Day 2: sky/firmament
• Day 3: land/seed-bearing plants, seas, vegetation
• Day 4: sun, moon, stars
• Day 5: birds, fish
• Day 6: land animals, people Teacher emphasizes “in order” language and that God creates by speaking. Students complete the chart with partner support using a word bank (see Resources).

4. 22–32 min · Discuss: God as Creator and significance. Teacher leads a guided discussion using three prompts:

• “How does the text show that God is Creator?”
• “What does God create that seems important for living things?”
• “Why might the created world be significant?” Students use sentence starters to answer: “In Genesis 1, God…” “This matters because…”

5. 32–40 min · Multimedia-supported retell. Teacher shows an audio/recorded read-aloud excerpt or teacher voice recording and pairs it with images for each day panel; students build a brief oral retell in pairs using the visual sequence. Students practice a 30–45 second summary.

6. 40–45 min · Quick assessment (exit ticket). Students write 3–4 sentences: (1) main idea, (2) one detail from any two consecutive days, (3) one sentence about God as Creator, (4) one reason the created world is significant. Teacher collects for review.

Assessment

• Formative check during chart completion: teacher circulates to confirm students correctly match days to details and use “in order” language.
• Formative discussion observation: listen for accurate use of vocabulary (e.g., Creator, create, sequence) and evidence from the text.
• Exit ticket (3–4 sentences): evaluate main idea, at least two consecutive-day details, and one God-as-Creator/importance statement.

Differentiation

• Support: provide a partially completed Day-by-Day chart (blanks for students to fill) and sentence frames (“On Day __, God created…”).
• Support for reading: allow students to follow along with the teacher read-aloud and use highlighted key phrases in the text.
• Extension: challenge students to include an additional detail (from Day 1–3 or Day 4–6) and explain significance using a “because” statement.
• EAL/SEN considerations: pre-teach vocabulary with quick teacher examples and allow oral response before writing; provide a word bank for retell and exit ticket.
