Day 1: Introduction to Magical Realism and Cultural Perspectives

Objective

Students will understand the concept of magical realism and its purpose in literature. They will begin to explore how different cultures are represented in text and how this can enhance world perspectives.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Copies of the handout "Introduction to Magical Realism"
• Projector for video clips

Lesson Activities

1. Warm-up (5 minutes)

   • Ask students to write down one word that comes to mind when they think of the term "magical." Have a few students share their words and discuss briefly.

2. Mini-Lecture and Discussion (10 minutes)

   • Define magical realism: A literary genre in which magical elements are a natural part of an otherwise mundane environment.
   • Discuss how it blends fantasy and reality, often to explore cultural themes.
   • Introduce Gabriel García Márquez as a key author in this genre, and mention the focus text: A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings.

3. Video Clips and Class Discussion (10 minutes)

   • Show short clips from adaptations of Márquez's works that illustrate elements of magical realism.
   • Discuss: How do these elements help communicate cultural values and beliefs?

4. Group Activity (10 minutes)
