1. Engage & Introduction (I Do) — 10 minutes

- Begin with a quick recap of whole number place value (ones, tens, hundreds) on a whiteboard for 2 minutes.
- Show a decimal number (e.g., 3.256) and explain the place values after the decimal point step-by-step. Use the large place value chart for visual aid.
- Read the decimal aloud slowly: “Three and two tenths, five hundredths, six thousandths.”
- Explain how decimals relate to fractions (2 tenths = 2/10, etc.) highlighting the connection.
- Model how to write decimals by placing digits in the chart.
- Show examples of comparing two decimals by examining digits place by place. Use comparison symbol cards.
- Answer quick questions for clarification.
Dyslexia Tip: Use color coding for place values (e.g., tenths - blue, hundredths - green, thousandths - red). Large fonts and clear spacing on the place value chart help readability.
2. Guided Practice (We Do) — 15 minutes
Goal: Practice identifying and labeling decimals collaboratively.
- Divide students into small groups of 4 with a large place value chart and decimal cards each.
- Provide decimal cards (e.g., 4.3, 0.57, 9.006) and ask groups to place them correctly on their chart.
- Together, say each decimal aloud emphasizing place values.

- Give pairs two decimal cards and have them decide which is larger or if equal, placing the comparison symbol between them on the table.

3. Independent Practice (You Do) — 15 minutes
Goal: Students work individually to demonstrate understanding.

a) Fill in missing digits in decimal place charts.
b) Write decimal numbers from given fractions.
c) Compare pairs of decimals using <, >, or = and explain reasoning in 1-2 sentences.
- Students complete individually.

4. Closing & Review — 5 minutes
