Overview

This 45-minute lesson is the fourth in a five-lesson phonics unit titled Phonics Power: Decoding Success. It focuses on reinforcing students’ decoding skills by combining vowel teams and consonant blends through a mix of independent work and interactive games. The class size is 8 fourth graders. 2. Independent Worksheet: Mixed Practice (15 minutes)

• Objective: Decode words and sentences using vowel teams and consonant blends independently.
• Activity:
  • Distribute worksheets featuring:
    • A word list mixing vowel team and blend patterns.
    • Simple sentences incorporating those words (e.g., “The blast from the storm was loud.”)
  • Students will:
    • First underline vowel teams and circle consonant blends in the words.
    • Then read sentences aloud to themselves, focusing on decoding.

3. Phonics Power Game: Word Race (15 minutes)

  • Divide the 8 students into 2 teams of 4.
  • Place index cards with mixed vowel team and consonant blend words face down.
  • One player per team draws a card, decodes the word aloud, and uses it in a sentence.
  • Teams earn points for:
    • Correct pronunciation (30 seconds on timer to encourage fluency) - 2 points
    • Correct sentence usage - 3 points
  • Rotate players, continue rounds until all cards are used or time runs out.
  • Bonus round: Teams create a short story using at least 5 decoded words. Each correct word used earns extra points.
• Engagement Tips: Use enthusiasm, quick pace, and small rewards such as stickers or “Phonics Power” badges.
• Assessment: Observe and record student performance during turns, noting pronunciation and sentence correctness.

  • Quick exit ticket: On a sticky note, write one word with a vowel team or blend they feel confident reading.
