Objective

By the end of this 60-minute lesson, the student will be able to write a detailed descriptive paragraph using vivid adjectives, sensory details, and strong action verbs, demonstrating improved fluency and creativity in writing.

Lesson Breakdown

1. Warm-Up & Focus (10 minutes)

• Begin with a brief mindfulness and focus activity: Take three slow, deep breaths together to calm the mind.
• Interactive Word Exploration Game: Present sensory word cards (adjectives like "crisp," "sparkling," "rough," verbs like "whisper," "dash"). Ask student to act out or describe a quick scenario using one of the cards to keep engagement high.
• Explain today’s goal: To create a vivid "word picture" using descriptive writing, so readers feel like they are inside the story.

2. Sensory Observation Activity (15 minutes)

• Mystery Box Exploration: Student reaches inside the box without looking and feels an object.
• Prompt student to describe the object using as many adjectives and action verbs as possible. Encourage sensory detail (touch, sound, smell, sight, taste if appropriate).
• Teacher models a sentence: "The rough pinecone crunched softly under my fingers as I squeezed it tightly."
• Student practices aloud several descriptive sentences about the object—teacher helps scaffold by asking guiding questions (What does it feel like? What does it remind you of?).

3. Guided Writing Practice (20 minutes)

• Writing Prompt: "Describe your favorite place using all five senses."
• Brainstorming: Using a graphic organizer, student lists adjectives and verbs related to the place. Use colored pencils to categorize by sense (e.g., blue for sight, green for sound).
• Writing: Student writes a descriptive paragraph focusing on showing instead of telling. Teacher uses encouraging prompts and reminders to include sensory details and strong verbs.
• Allow for breaks as needed (student with ADHD) – small 1-minute stretch breaks every 7-8 minutes to maintain focus.

4. Sharing and Feedback (10 minutes)

• Student reads her paragraph aloud expressively.
• Teacher highlights vivid word choices and sensory details, reinforcing specific examples of excellent descriptive writing.
• Positive, constructive feedback focusing on how the writing creates a "movie in your mind."
• If time allows, student can revise one or two sentences to make them more descriptive based on feedback.

5. Wrap-Up and Reflection (5 minutes)

• Quick interactive exit ticket: Student names three new descriptive words or techniques she used today.
• Reflect aloud: “How did using your senses help your writing?”
• Preview next lesson’s focus: adding dialogue or similes to descriptive writing.
