Discussion Skills Sprint

Overview

Today’s lesson builds students’ ability to participate in collaborative discussions and to clearly present ideas based on a short, grade-appropriate text. Students will also practice summarizing information they hear by using a structured note-taking and speaking routine.

Learning intentions

• Students will prepare for a discussion by rereading a short text and using notes to share ideas.
• Students will summarize key ideas from a read-aloud using clear, accurate language.
• Students will engage in collaborative discussion by building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
• Students will adapt their speech to a discussion setting by using formal, respectful language.

Success criteria

• I can state a clear summary of the read-aloud in a few sentences.
• I can use discussion moves (ask a question, agree/disagree with a reason, add-on) during my group talk.
• I can listen actively and respond to classmates by building on their ideas.
• I can present my ideas clearly using academic vocabulary and complete sentences.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Hook (Set purpose). Teacher displays the discussion question: “What is one important idea from the text, and why does it matter?” and reviews today’s goal for respectful turn-taking. Students turn-and-talk to share one idea, using a stem: “One important idea is…”

2. 5–15 min · Reading + writing routine (EL reading/writing). Teacher reads aloud a short grade-5 informational text (1–2 pages) at an appropriate pace, stopping to check comprehension. Students complete a “Key Idea + Evidence” organizer with two boxes: (1) Key idea in 8–10 words, (2) Evidence phrase from the text. Then students write a 3–sentence micro-summary:

• Sentence 1: main idea
• Sentence 2: supporting detail
• Sentence 3: why it matters (based on the text)

3. 15–25 min · Listening/speaking modeling (EL oral language). Teacher models a brief summary aloud using student-friendly language and highlights “summary words” (main idea, supports, because, overall). Students listen for structure and underline the summary parts on their own paper. Teacher prompts: “What did I say first? What detail did I include? What connecting word helped my explanation?”

4. 25–40 min · Collaborative discussion (Group talk). Students join groups of 4 with assigned roles: Discussion Captain (keeps us on topic), Summarizer (shares group summary), Listener (asks a follow-up), Evidence Finder (points to evidence). Each student must contribute using at least one discussion move card:

• “I agree because…”
• “I add on…”
• “Can you explain how…?”
• “Another example is…” Teacher circulates, using a checklist to note: clear contributions, evidence use, and building on peers.

5. 40–50 min · Whole-class share (Formal English adaptation). Teacher selects 3–4 students to share their micro-summary with a partner first, then speaks with the class. Students use a formal structure: “My summary is… The evidence is… Overall, it matters because…” Teacher provides quick feedback on clarity and language.

6. 50–58 min · Interactive review (Accountable listening). Teacher rereads one key paragraph briefly. Students revise their micro-summary by improving one sentence (clarity, accuracy, or connecting word). In pairs, students read their revised summaries to each other, then trade one “glow” (what improved) and one “grow” (next step).

7. 58–60 min · Exit ticket (Assessment). Students complete a quick written prompt: “In one sentence, summarize the main idea. Then write one question you would ask a classmate about it.” Teacher collects.

• Short informational text at grade 5 readability (teacher-selected), 1–2 pages
• “Key Idea + Evidence” organizer (paper or digital)

• Summary word list on chart paper: main idea, supports, because, overall, evidence
• Highlighters or sticky notes
• Teacher checklist for discussion observation

Assessment

• Formative during reading/writing: check for accurate key idea statements and use of evidence phrases.
• Formative during discussion: use a checklist for participation, evidence use, and building on others’ ideas.
• Exit ticket: evaluate summary clarity (main idea + supporting detail) and presence of a valid question.

Differentiation

• Provide EL scaffolds: sentence frames for micro-summary and discussion moves; model one example before student production.
• Word support: pre-teach 5–7 essential terms from the text with student-friendly definitions and example sentences.
• For students needing support: allow “evidence phrase” copying from the text, then add a short connecting clause (“This shows that…”).
• For advanced learners: require a “why it matters” clause that links to another text or real-world scenario, or add a second supporting detail.
