Overview

Today’s lesson uses stations and hands-on “ecosystem scenario” tasks to help students observe and describe how organisms survive using biotic and abiotic factors in a healthy ecosystem, and how human activities can help or harm. It builds toward understanding that ecosystems are systems with interacting parts.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook. Teacher displays a “mini ecosystem” picture (or short described scenario) and asks: “What living things and non-living things do you notice?” Students turn-and-talk with a partner and share one observation.
