Overview

In this final lesson of Earth Systems in Change, students use their research from Lessons 1–2 to explain how one environmental change affects multiple Earth systems. They write an evidence-based explanation or proposal, give a brief oral briefing, and use peer feedback to revise their work.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–6 min · Reconnect and hook. Teacher displays a striking before-and-after image of a changed environment using the opening hook and unit recap slides and asks, “If one part of Earth changes, what else might change?” Students turn and talk, then identify one environmental change and two connected systems from their previous research.

  2. 6–14 min · Model the writing task. Teacher uses the claim-and-evidence model slides to model a short paragraph about a familiar issue, such as increased drought affecting soil, plants, animals, and available water. Teacher highlights the claim, evidence, system-to-system relationship, proposed response, and transition words. Students help label each part and suggest whether the evidence supports the claim.

  3. 14–20 min · Plan with a visual. Teacher distributes the Earth Systems Cause-effect Cards to six pairs and explains the procedure: select a cause and matching effect, then connect the effect to at least one additional Earth system. Students use their research notes and the cards to sketch a cause-and-effect chain in the evidence-based solution organizer. Each student chooses an individual claim, even if partners discuss the same topic.

  4. 20–35 min · Draft an explanation or proposal. Teacher conferences with pairs and reminds students to verify evidence against their notes rather than relying on opinion. Students independently write a 2–3 paragraph response in the worksheet, including a claim, two or more relevant facts or data points, an explanation of effects on at least two systems, a realistic response, and one alternate viewpoint or limitation. Students use transitions such as “as a result,” “because,” “in contrast,” and “therefore.”

  5. 35–44 min · Peer feedback. Teacher displays the peer-review instructions and checklist and assigns partners. Students read one another’s drafts and complete the worksheet checklist: underline the claim, star evidence, circle a systems connection, and write one “glow” and one specific “grow.” Partners also check whether the proposed response is realistic and whether the alternate viewpoint is clearly acknowledged.

  6. 44–54 min · Oral briefings and revision. Teacher displays the oral briefing and discussion prompt slides and invites students to deliver 45-second briefings in six pairs, with one student presenting while the partner listens for evidence and then switching roles. Each briefing states the environmental change, explains a systems relationship, recommends a response, and acknowledges another perspective. Students revise one sentence or add one piece of evidence after presenting.

  7. 54–60 min · Synthesis and exit ticket. Teacher returns to the opening question and facilitates a short discussion about why Earth systems should be considered together. Students complete the final section of the evidence-based solution organizer: “My strongest evidence is ___ because ___,” and “One revision I made was ___.” Collect the worksheets as the exit assessment.
