Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and retrieval. Teacher displays the opening question, “Can something be living if we cannot see its cells?” and uses the opening question and cell images to show a microscope image beside a picture of a rock; students write a prediction and recall the parts of cell theory they learned earlier in the unit.

  2. 5–10 min · Model the procedure.   5. 32–40 min · CER writing and discussion. Teacher models a concise claim-evidence-reasoning response using a new example, then directs students to complete the CER prompt on the claim-evidence-reasoning section: “Are the tested items living or nonliving based on evidence of cells?” Students write a claim, cite at least two specific observations, explain how those observations connect to cell theory, and acknowledge an alternate or inconclusive interpretation when appropriate.

  6. 40–45 min · Share and exit check. Teacher invites two or three teams to present their conclusions using the CER sharing and exit prompts and emphasizes that evidence must support—not merely repeat—the claim; students complete the worksheet exit response: “State one conclusion from today’s investigation and cite one observation that supports it.”
