Introduction (2 minutes)

• Objective Sharing: Tell the students that today they will embark on a fun math adventure to add and subtract large numbers with regrouping.

Direct Instruction (5 minutes)

• Place Value Review: Briefly review place values (hundreds, tens, ones) using the large place value chart.
• Two-Step Demonstration: On the whiteboard, demonstrate regrouping with an example problem:
  • Addition: 487 + 356
    • Step 1: Start with the ones place. 7 + 6 = 13. Write 3 and carry over 1 to the tens.
    • Step 2: Move to the tens place. 8 + 5 = 13, plus 1 carried over = 14. Write 4 and carry over 1 to the hundreds.
    • Step 3: Add the hundreds. 4 + 3 = 7, plus 1 carried over = 8.
    • Result: 843
  • Subtraction: 834 - 258
    • Step 1: Start with the ones place. 4 - 8 cannot be done. Borrow 1 from the tens place making it 14 - 8 = 6.
    • Step 2: Move to the tens place. 2 left in tens, subtract 5, we can't, so we need to borrow from the hundreds.
    • Step 3: Result in hundreds: 7 - 2 = 5 and original tens calculation after borrowing: 12 - 5 = 7.
    • Result: 576
