- Large printed or drawn examples of each shape
- Dot paper and square grid paper (one per student)
- Playdough
- Toothpicks
- Geo boards and rubber bands (20 sets)
- Dyslexia-friendly printed shape name cards with clear font (e.g., OpenDyslexic) and simple shape images

Lesson Procedure
1. Hook/Warm-Up (3 minutes)
Teacher Says: "Today, we are going to be Shape Detectives! Let’s look around our classroom—how many different flat shapes can you find?"
- Show a quick slide or large posted shapes and ask: “Who can find the triangle? How about the circle?”
- Encourage students to shout out a shape name or point.
Purpose: Spark curiosity and activate prior knowledge, prepare students for shape vocabulary.
2. Introduce Key Vocabulary and Definitions (5 minutes)
Write the words on the board with simple definitions and pictures:
- Polygon: A flat shape with straight sides.
- Quadrilateral: A polygon with 4 sides.
- Circle: A round shape with no sides or vertices.
- Triangle: Polygon with 3 sides.
- Square: Quadrilateral with 4 equal sides and 4 vertices.
- Pentagon: Polygon with 5 sides.
- Hexagon: Polygon with 6 sides.
- Octagon: Polygon with 8 sides.
- Vertex (Vertices): The corner or point where two sides meet.
Dyslexia Friendly Tip: Use large, clear font cards with simple images and repeat the words aloud while pointing to each.
Teacher Models: Drawing triangle and pointing to vertices, counting aloud.
3. Interactive Questions (5 minutes)
Use a Think-Pair-Share approach. Ask students to turn to a partner and answer:
- “What shape has 3 sides? How many vertices does it have?”
- "Which shape is a polygon but is not a quadrilateral?"
- “Can you name a shape that has 8 sides?”
- “What is a vertex? Can you show it on this square?”
Sentence Stems for Support/Responses:
- "A triangle has ___ sides and ___ vertices."
- "A polygon is a shape with ___ sides."
- "A vertex is where ___ meet."
Include answers to encourage: e.g.,
- Triangle, 3, 3 vertices

Differentiation: Provide sentence stems written down for ESL and below-level readers; for gifted, encourage forming their own questions.
4. Engagement Activity: Stem Shape Building (7 minutes)
Students use playdough and toothpicks or geo boards and rubber bands to build shapes.
- Challenge: "Make a triangle. Now, make a square. How many vertices do you see?"
- Then, encourage them to make: pentagon, hexagon, octagon shapes with manipulatives.
- Circulate and ask: “How can you check the number of sides?” and “Show me the vertices.”
Language focus: Encourage full sentence responses:
- “My pentagon has 5 vertices.”
- “This shape is called a hexagon because it has 6 sides.”
Support: Teachers provide key vocabulary cards for reference.
5. Drawing Practice on Dot or Square Grid Paper (4 minutes)

6. Closing/Assessment (3 minutes)
Quick, verbal exit ticket questions:
- “Name one polygon you learned today.”
- “How many sides does a hexagon have?”
- “Where is a vertex on a triangle?”

Collect drawings to informally assess if shapes and vertices are correctly represented.
