Parts of Animals - Engage - Accessing Prior Knowledge Due to the nature of this activity, there is not a digitized page for students to submit their answers online.
Description In this activity, students make observations of four different animals and choose why what is covering each animal is important to the animal.
Materials Printed Material 1 Parts of Animals (per student or class)
Consumable None
Reusable None
Preparation You may choose to either print out the Parts of Animals for each student or project the slideshow of images. Procedure and Facilitation Points Instruct students that they are to observe the four different animals, either in pairs or groups, and discuss what is covering the animals and why that is important to that animal. Allow students the chance to share their discussions. Facilitate a class discussion about their choices. This provides an opportunity to gather an understanding of prior student knowledge before beginning the lesson. Encourage students to support their answers and check for understanding and preconceptions. Preconceptions These preconceptions can be addressed as students move through the scope and do not need to be clarified at this point. Be sure to keep the preconceptions uncovered during this APK in mind as you move through the scope.
Students may be able to name structures in animals but not understand the function. Animal structures each serve a purpose, for example, legs for walking, arms or claws for climbing, mouths for eating, wings for flying, eyes for seeing, strong back legs for running, etc.
Students may think animals’ structures function in the same way. Not all structures function in the same way (for example, eagles have good eyesight for hunting prey, but bats do not).
