Objective

By the end of this 15-minute lesson, 1st grade students will be able to identify and use basic Spanish vocabulary related to family members, school items, and clothing through completing fill-in-the-gap sentences. This lesson supports the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts with a focus on language acquisition and comprehension skills.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Printed Spanish vocabulary worksheet (provided below; one per student)
• Picture cards representing family members, school items, and clothing
• Stickers or small rewards for participation

Lesson Procedures

1. Warm-Up (3 minutes)

• Greet students in Spanish using simple phrases (e.g., "¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?") to build a welcoming language atmosphere.
• Show picture cards one by one (family member, school item, clothing). Say the word in Spanish and have students repeat chorally.
• Example words: madre, padre, escuela, libro, camisa, zapatos.

2. Vocabulary Introduction and Modeling (4 minutes)

• Write 3 words under each category on the whiteboard with corresponding images.
• Say each word, have students repeat, then use each word in a simple sentence in English and Spanish (e.g., "This is a libro. Libro means book.")
• Emphasize pronunciation and letter sounds.

3. Guided Practice: Fill-the-Gap Worksheet (6 minutes)

• Hand out the worksheet with sentences in Spanish with blanks for family, school, and clothing vocabulary.
• Read each sentence aloud slowly, and ask students to repeat after you. Then have students fill in the blanks individually.
• Walk around and assist students as needed, encouraging them to use the context of sentences.

4. Review and Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

• Select 3-4 students to read their filled sentences aloud in Spanish.
• Give positive feedback and reinforce vocabulary by pointing to images or the words on the board.

Assessment

• Informal through observation of student participation and accuracy in the worksheet.
• Listening to individual student reading of filled sentences to assess pronunciation and comprehension.
