Final Multiplication Test

Overview

Today students complete the final comprehensive multiplication test, using multiplication charts as a reference when needed. The test targets fluency with multiplication and the related division facts through understanding equal groups and the relationship between multiplication and division.

Learning intentions

• Students will solve multiplication problems within 100 using strategies and/or the multiplication chart.
• Students will use the relationship between multiplication and division to determine missing values.
• Students will accurately find unknown numbers in multiplication or division equations.
• Students will demonstrate growth from the unit by completing the test with focus and careful work.

Success criteria

• I can multiply two one-digit numbers and record the product correctly.
• I can use multiplication to solve division facts or missing-value division problems.
• I can determine the unknown whole number in equations like (8 \times? = 48) or (? \div 3 = 5).
• I can explain or show my thinking using drawings, arrays, or equations when asked.

Lesson structure ({total minutes})

1. 0–5 min · Test prep and mindset. Teacher reviews expectations for testing (quiet focus, show work when asked, use the chart appropriately) and points to the answer sheet sections. Students sit with pencils, test packets, and a multiplication chart, and repeat the plan: “Read, solve, check.”

2. 5–10 min · Quick warm-up: equal groups. Teacher shows 2–3 fast examples as equal groups (e.g., “3 groups of 6” as an array) and models writing an equation. Students complete 3 brief items on scrap paper: match an array/equal groups picture to the correct multiplication equation.

3. 10–48 min · Final comprehensive test (teacher monitors). Teacher distributes the test and reminds students to use the chart for products they don’t immediately know, but still try strategies first (skip-counting, arrays, repeated addition if needed). Students complete the test independently. The test includes a mix of:

• Products of two one-digit numbers (expected fluency within 100).
• Multiplication word problems shown as equal groups/arrays or measurement-style totals.
• Related division questions (e.g., knowing (8 \times 5 = 40) to find (40 \div 5 = 8)).
• Missing-number equations such as (8 \times? = 48), (? \div 3 = 5), and (6 \times 6 =?). Teacher circulates to clarify directions without giving answers.

4. 48–55 min · Self-check and strategy reflection. Teacher gives a checklist for students to review: “Did I match multiplication to the picture? Did I check division/missing numbers? Did I label answers?” Students reread their work and correct any evident mistakes. If the test includes a short reflection prompt, they answer in 1–2 sentences.

5. 55–60 min · Collect and quick exit check. Teacher collects tests and gives a quick 1-minute “confidence check” problem on the board (example: “What is (7 \times 6)?” with students writing only the answer). Students submit the final answer on a small slip as an exit check for immediate feedback on fluency.

Assessment

• Formative during warm-up: verify students can translate equal groups to multiplication equations.
• Summative: final comprehensive test performance across multiplication, equal groups/word problems, and related division/missing values.
• Quick exit check at the end (one multiplication fact) to gauge immediate fluency.

Differentiation

• Support: allow the multiplication chart throughout the test; encourage students to draw an array for word problems (even one quick sketch).
• Support for equations: provide equation-stem examples on scratch paper (e.g., “If (8 \times 5 = 40), then (40 \div 5 = 8)”).
• If a student is hesitant: offer direction clarification only (read the problem, identify what the unknown represents, choose an equation).
• Extension (only if time remains during the test): ask the student to use two different strategies for one problem (array and skip-counting, or equation and fact relationship).

Notes for the teacher (test item balance guidance)

• Ensure most items are within the two one-digit multiplication products (0–9) and stay within products under 100.
• Include at least several items that require linking multiplication to division or filling an unknown in an equation.
• Include at least one short word problem that can be solved using equal groups/arrays, not only number sentences.
