SL.1.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. SL.1.1.(b): Build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges. SL.1.4: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.: You will be conducting an experiment about flying. We will make predictions about what will fly farthest: a flat piece of paper, a paper glider, or a crumpled piece of paper. Unit 02: Taking Flight | English Language Arts 17 I can build upon others’ talk in conversations. (SL.1(b)) I can describe familiar events (flight experiment) with details, and share my ideas and feelings. (SL.1.4) Note: Provide each group with three pieces of paper. Have students use the Falling, Floating, Gliding Worksheet (Gr1_Unit2_UnitLaunch_HowToMakeAGlider) to use one sheet of paper to create a paper glider. Show students a model of each type of paper. Groups should take turns throwing the flat paper, gliders, and crumpled paper. Note: Students should make and document observations on the My Falling, Floating, Gliding Observations worksheet. (Gr1_Unit2_UnitLaunch_ObservationSheet). Have a collaborative conversation in which students share observations they have made and draw conclusions about what made the paper fly (in any form). Teachers will document observations on an anchor web that can be used throughout the unit. Say: We will begin reading a variety of texts over the next few weeks that teach about flight. Throughout these texts, we will learn information about the science and history of human flight. Note: Introduce an anchor web titled “Our Flight Observations.” This anchor web will capture the observations made by students through inquiry activities and reading about what makes things fly. Say: We will start by adding our observations about how the three pieces of paper moved through the air when we threw them. We will share our observations. I am looking for students who can describe what happened during their experiment and share ideas about what happened and why. Note: Give students talk stems such as ‘I noticed, When I threw the ___ I saw ____, I feel that.’ Write the observations on the anchor web. Say: What forms of paper flew best? What attributes did that type of paper have? Note: Encourage students to build upon their observations by making inferences about how the attributes helped the paper fly. Add attributes to this web as you move through the texts in this unit.
