Lesson Activities

1. Warm-Up & Activation (5 minutes)

• Begin with a brief discussion: "What does cultural flourishing mean? Can culture change during difficult times?"
• Use the whiteboard to quickly build a mind map based on their responses.
• Introduce today’s focus: The Golden Age of Jewish culture in Spain — a time of remarkable achievements.

2. Video Viewing with Guided Questions (10 minutes)

• Show the video highlighting key Jewish philosophers (e.g., Maimonides), scientists, and artists of the time.
• Distribute note-taking sheets that prompt students to jot down:
  • Three contributions from Jewish thinkers.
  • One example of how Jewish culture influenced wider society.
  • One question or interesting fact they want to explore further.

3. Group Discussion & Analysis (10 minutes)

• Break class into small groups (3-4 students; one group with 3 to fit class size).
• Using sticky notes:
  • Each student writes one contribution or fact learned on a blue sticky note.
  • Each student writes a question or curiosity on a green sticky note.
  • Each student writes one connection they can make to today's world on a yellow sticky note.
• Groups share their notes and discuss for 5 minutes, identifying common themes and surprises.

4. Quick Write & Share (8 minutes)

• Individually, students write a brief paragraph (3-5 sentences) on the prompt:
  • "How did Jewish thinkers during the Golden Age of Spain help shape ideas in philosophy, science, or the arts? Why is it important to remember this period today?"
• After writing, at least 3 volunteers share their paragraphs aloud. Teacher provides constructive feedback and ties responses back to the lesson objectives.

5. Closure & Exit Ticket (5 minutes)

• Summarize the main points on the board using student input.
• Exit Ticket (on index cards or paper):
  • Name one thinker or cultural contribution from the Golden Age.
  • Explain in one sentence why this "Golden Age" was important to Jewish history.
• Collect exit tickets as students leave.
