Materials Needed

• Picture books about community and government services (e.g., fire department, library, police)

• Chart paper or large paper for group lists
• Markers or crayons
• Visual flashcards depicting various public services
• Audio recordings explaining public services (for dyslexic-friendly support)

Lesson Procedure

1. Warm-Up Activity (5 minutes)

• Engage: Ask students, "What kinds of helpers do we see in our neighborhood that the city or government provides for free or for everyone’s safety?"
• Show visual flashcards of a firefighter, librarian, police officer, garbage collector, and park ranger as cues.
• Briefly explain that these helpers are part of public services from the government.

2. Group Research Activity (15 minutes)

• Divide the class into 4 groups of 5 students each.
• Provide each group with:
  • A set of picture books and printed pictures of public services.
  • Tablet/computer with preloaded safe websites or videos about government services (ensure auditory and visual aids available).
• Instruction: Each group will find and write or draw at least 5 public government services.
• Teacher circulates to support reading and clarifying content. Dyslexic students get extra help through audio support and visual aids.
• Emphasize collaboration and taking turns speaking.

3. Group Presentations (7 minutes)

• Each group presents their list to the class.
• Encourage students to speak clearly and show any drawings or notes.
• After each presentation, ask one or two clarifying questions to deepen understanding (e.g., “Why do you think the library is important?”).

4. Wrap-Up and Reflection (3 minutes)

• Summarize: Highlight the kinds of services the government provides that help everyone.
• Reinforce the idea that these are services paid by everyone to help keep the community safe, clean, and happy.
• Have students complete the sentence aloud: “A government service I liked learning about is __________ because __________.”
