Inventions That Changed

Overview

In this 240-minute session (Lesson 4 of 10) for two learners simultaneously, students investigate a historical invention, explain the problem it solved, and communicate its impact. Year 1 focuses on building a simple poster; Year 5 prepares a short, structured presentation.

Learning intentions

• Students will identify an invention from the past and describe what need it met.
• Students will use facts from a source to explain how the invention changed people’s lives.
• Year 1 students will create a clear, labeled poster with pictures and short sentences.
• Year 5 students will plan and rehearse a presentation using organized notes.

Success criteria

• I can name an invention and tell what problem or need it addressed.
• I can share at least 2 details about how it helped people.
• I can write/speak in complete sentences with supportive details.
• Year 1: My poster has a title, drawing, and simple labels/sentences.
• Year 5: My presentation has a clear opening, supporting points, and a closing.

Lesson structure ({total minutes})

1. 15 min – Warm start & unit connection Gather together and review the unit theme “Builders & Innovators.” Each child picks one historical invention they already know (for example: wheel, printing press, telephone, steam engine). Share the guiding question: “What need did it solve, and how did it change life?”

2. 45 min – Research sprint (shared theme, scaled tasks) Provide two short, age-appropriate informational options (printed pages, library books, or teacher-prepared text).

• Year 1: Look for 2–3 picture-supported facts; mark with simple notes like “needed,” “helped,” “changed.”
• Year 5: Read for specific evidence (when/where invented, the problem, and 2 impacts). Record notes in a structured graphic organizer (Problem / Evidence / Impact).

3. 60 min – Create: Year 1 invention poster Year 1 builds a poster of the favorite invention. Include: title, a large drawing, 3 simple labels (need, how it works, impact), and 1–2 short sentences. Teacher supports sentence frames such as “This invention helps people because…” and “It changed life by…”

4. 70 min – Plan & rehearse: Year 5 presentation Year 5 prepares a 1–2 minute presentation using clear structure:

• Opening: “The invention I chose is…”
• Need/problem: “People needed…”
• How it worked (one evidence detail): “It worked by…”
• Impact (two evidence details): “It changed daily life by…” and “It helped in…”
• Closing: “Overall, this invention mattered because…” Students practice once aloud, then record adjustments (clarity, accuracy, order).

5. 20 min – Pair share & feedback loop Each learner presents to the other at their own level. Use a simple feedback rule: “Tell one strong fact you heard” and “Ask one question about the need or impact.”

6. 10 min – Quick reflection wrap Students complete an exit reflection in their mode:

• Year 1: choose one emoji-like rating (easy/good/hard) and say one fact aloud.
• Year 5: write one sentence beginning with “One important impact was…”

Resources

• Printed informational text or teacher-prepared fact pages about 2–4 historical inventions
• Picture cards for Year 1 (problem/impact/changed-life images)
• Graphic organizer for Year 5 (Problem / Evidence / Impact / Closing)
• Poster paper or large sheets, markers, crayons, glue
• Sentence frames for Year 1 and a planning template for Year 5
• Timer for timed research and rehearsal
• Sticky notes for marking key details in the text
• Optional: simple timeline strip to place inventions in “long ago” sequence

Assessment

• Observational checklist during share-out: correct invention, at least two accurate details, and clear explanation of need/impact.
• Poster quality for Year 1: readable title, labels/sentences, and a clear connection to need and impact.
• Year 5 presentation rubric (informal): organization, use of evidence, and clarity during rehearsal and response to one question.

Differentiation

• Support for Year 1: provide picture-heavy text; pre-select a small set of facts; use sentence frames and word banks (need/help/changed).
• Support for Year 5: supply a partially completed outline; model one example sentence; highlight evidence sentences to reuse.
• Extension for Year 5: add “trade-offs/limitations” (one sentence: “It also had limits…”), or compare two inventions and choose the better solution for a specific need.
• EAL/SEN options: allow oral responses first, then short writing; use visual organizers; confirm meaning with gestures and quick check questions. For students needing more structure, reduce to one impact detail and build from there.
