Overview
This 30-minute lesson introduces students to famous inventors, focusing on how inventive thinking helps solve problems and inspires new ideas. Students will engage with stories of inventors, explore the idea of problem-solving through invention, and make connections to their own creative potential.

- Chart paper or whiteboard and markers

- Timer or clock
Lesson Breakdown
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin with a warm-up question: “Can you think of something you use every day that someone had to invent?” Write student answers on the board.
- Explain the goal: “Today we will learn about some famous inventors and how they thought of ideas that helped solve problems. We’ll talk about why invention is important.”
- Briefly introduce the word inventive thinking - thinking creatively to come up with new ideas or solutions.
2. Mini-Lesson: Inventors’ Stories (10 minutes)
- Share brief, engaging stories of three inventors using simple language and visuals:
- Thomas Edison — invented the practical light bulb to solve the problem of dark homes and businesses.
- Marie Curie — invented ways to study invisible energy to help doctors treat sickness.
- Garrett Morgan — invented a traffic signal that made streets safer for people.
- After each story, ask:
“What problem did this inventor solve?”
“How do you think they came up with their idea?”
- Chart the problems and inventive solutions on the board.
3. Guided Discussion & Reflection (7 minutes)
- Ask students: “Can you think of a problem you see around you at school, home, or in your neighborhood? What do you wish worked better?”
- Allow students to share their ideas aloud. Record at least 3 problems on chart paper.
- Prompt students to think about: “How could someone invent something to fix it?”
- Reinforce connection to inventive thinking: “Inventors look at problems and think about new ways to solve them, just like you did!”
4. Independent Writing Activity (6 minutes)
- Have the student write or draw a response to the prompt:
“Think of one problem you see around you. What could you invent to fix it? Describe or draw your invention.”
- Encourage creativity and remind them there are no wrong answers.
- Circulate and discuss their ideas, prompting deeper thinking if needed.
5. Closing & Assessment (2 minutes)
- Have the student share their inventive idea.
- Use questioning to assess understanding:
- “Why do inventors think about problems first?”
- “How can your invention help others like the ones we learned about?”
- Summarize the day’s lesson with this key message: “Inventive thinking helps people change the world by solving problems.”
Extension Ideas (Optional)
- Read more about lesser-known inventors from diverse backgrounds.
- Create a class “Invention Wall” to continue generating ideas throughout the unit.
- Experiment with a simple design challenge in future lessons inspired by today’s inventors.
