Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–7 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Display a photograph of a rainstorm over a forest from the opening photo and hook question and ask, “How many parts of Earth are involved in this scene?” Students independently list visible or inferred Earth features, then share with a partner. Invite several responses without confirming all ideas yet.

  2. 7–17 min · Build the system model. Use the four Earth systems teaching slides to introduce the systems: geosphere (solid Earth, rocks, soil, and landforms), hydrosphere (all water), atmosphere (the layer of gases surrounding Earth), and biosphere (living things). Students complete the four-box vocabulary section of the Earth systems evidence worksheet by recording a definition and one example for each system. Emphasize that a single place can include all four systems.

  3. 17–27 min · Read and examine sources. Place students in four groups of three. Provide each group with a short, teacher-created source set containing one labeled landscape diagram, one simple map, and four short paragraphs about water, air, land, and living things. Model how to read a visual by identifying its title, labels, arrows, patterns, and key. Students annotate their source set and complete the “What does the source show?” prompts on the Earth systems evidence worksheet. Pause to ask groups to point to evidence rather than rely on prior knowledge.

  4. 27–42 min · Map interactions. Give each group a different scenario, such as rain soaking into soil, plants releasing water vapor, sunlight warming ocean water, or erosion carrying soil into a stream.   5. 42–51 min · Group explanation and compare sources. Display the interaction discussion and comparison prompts. Each group gives a one-minute explanation using the frame, “The ___ system interacts with the ___ system when ___. The text says/shows ___. The diagram or map shows ___.” Classmates identify whether the text and visual provide the same information, different information, or additional information. Ask students to explain how the visual makes one detail easier to understand.

  6. 51–57 min · Individual synthesis. Students independently complete the central-idea and evidence questions on the Earth systems evidence worksheet. They write a two- to three-sentence summary answering: “How do Earth’s systems work together in the scenario your group studied?” Require one cited detail from the text and one reference to the visual.

  7. 57–60 min · Exit check. Show the final review and exit prompt. Students respond on the bottom of the worksheet: “Name two Earth systems and explain one way matter or energy moves between them. Cite one source detail.” Collect worksheets to identify misconceptions before Lesson 2.
