Materials Needed
- Flashlights (one per pair)
- Small opaque objects (blocks, toy figurines)
- White poster boards or sheets of white paper (for shadow projection)
- Transparent strings or yarn
- Tape
- Rulers
- Markers
- Chart paper or whiteboard and markers
Lesson Breakdown
1. Introduction (8 minutes)
- Engage students with a question:
"Have you ever noticed how your shadow changes when you move around a lamp or in the sun?"
- Briefly review previous lesson concepts on light and shadows.
- Introduce the focus for today: “We will explore the pathways light takes and how it makes shadows by traveling in straight lines.”
- Show a flashlight in a darkened corner of the room and an object blocking it to display a shadow.
Teacher Tip: Keep the tone curious and invite students to predict what they think will happen during the activities.
2. Direct Instruction / Demonstration (7 minutes)
- Demonstrate the straight-line property of light using a flashlight and a pencil.
- Tape one end of yarn to the flashlight beam and stretch the yarn out straight to the shadow on a poster board, illustrating the light path.
- Show how moving the light or object changes the shadow’s size and shape due to the light’s path.
- Emphasize vocabulary with visuals: light, shadow, pathways, opaque.
3. Hands-On Activity: Modeling Light Pathways (20 minutes)
Students will work in pairs.
Procedure:
- Provide each pair with a flashlight, objects, paper, string, tape, and rulers.
- Instruct pairs to:
- Shine the flashlight on the object towards the paper to create a shadow.
- Use string to trace the straight path of the light from the source to the object and to the paper where the shadow is formed.
- Measure and adjust distances to see how moving the flashlight or the object affects the shadow.
- Ask pairs to draw the shadow shape on the paper and mark the light path lines they modeled.
- Encourage pairs to discuss and write one sentence explaining their observations using vocabulary words.
Differentiation: Provide guiding questions or diagrams for students who need support.
4. Group Sharing and Discussion (7 minutes)
- Invite pairs to present their models and explain their observations.
- Write key ideas on the board/chart: "Light travels in straight lines," "Shadows form where light is blocked," and "Changing the light source or object changes the shadow."
- Conduct a guided class discussion using prompts:
- What did you notice happens to the shadow when the light source moves closer?
- How does the shape of the object affect the shadow?
- Why do you think light travels straight and not around corners?
5. Assessment & Closure (3 minutes)
- Quick exit ticket: Each student writes one sentence or draws a picture explaining how light travels and why shadows form.
- Collect exit tickets to assess individual understanding.
Extensions and Home Connection
- Extension Activity (optional): Create shadow puppets at home using a flashlight and household objects, then draw and describe the shadow shapes formed.
- Home Connection: Invite students to observe shadows at home throughout the day and note changes relative to the light source (sun or lamp).
