Market Pricing Craft

Overview

In this 60-minute writing and math-connected ELA mini-unit, students introduce a topic (craft pricing) and group related information (materials, quantities, costs) into a clear informative explanation. They will practice selecting and organizing information accurately by computing totals using addition and subtraction.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Warm-up (pricing thinking). Teacher shows a simple “materials list” on paper (e.g., yarn $2, beads $3, glue $1) and asks, “How do we find the total?” Student answers orally and gestures to which items add together.

2. 5–15 min · Direct teach (topic + grouped details). Teacher models a short example paragraph with grouped information: Materials, Calculations, Final Price, and adds a small labeled sketch beside it. Student watches, then identifies (with prompts) which sentences belong to each group.

3. 15–30 min · Compute craft totals (addition/subtraction). Teacher provides the student’s craft cost card:

• Supplies A: 3 items at $1 each
• Supplies B: 1 item at $4
• Supplies C: $3 already paid, plus 1 new item at $2 (total cost for C) Teacher asks the student to show work using number sentences. Student calculates totals step-by-step and writes equations.

4. 30–42 min · Draft an informative paragraph. Teacher gives a paragraph frame with “topic sentence,” “grouped details,” and “closing sentence,” and reminds: include an illustration if it helps. Student drafts 5–7 sentences explaining how they priced the craft, referencing their calculations.

5. 42–52 min · Revise for clarity (guided check). Teacher uses a simple checklist aligned to today’s goal:

• I introduced the topic.
• My details are grouped (Materials/Cost/Final Price).
• My illustration matches my explanation. Student rereads and revises at least two parts (a sentence that’s unclear and a missing detail).

6. 52–58 min · Edit for accuracy. Teacher models one quick editing pass: reread for complete sentences, then fix spelling/grammar using the student’s best effort and teacher guidance. Student makes edits and rewrites neatly or types.

7. 58–60 min · Share and exit check. Teacher asks the student to read the first sentence and the final price aloud. Student completes a 1-sentence exit response: “My final craft price is ___ because ___.”

• Printed craft pricing worksheet (materials list + price chart)
• Pen/pencil, paper or lined writing journal
• Checklist for revising (topic, grouped details, illustration, clarity)
• Scrap paper for a labeled sketch (or a simple drawing template)
• Craft example or picture (even if pretend) to anchor the paragraph
• Number sentence scratch area (blank boxes for “+” and “−”)

Assessment

• Teacher observes during step 3: student correctly sets up and solves addition/subtraction equations for totals.
• Teacher uses the revision checklist in step 5 to confirm the paragraph has grouped details and an accurate illustration.
• Exit check in step 7 verifies the student can state the final craft price with a reason.

Differentiation

• Support (4-year-old pre-k / speech delay readiness): provide a second “talking script” card with sentence stems the student can choose from (e.g., “First, I bought ___.” “Then I added ___.”). Even if speech is limited, allow pointing and choosing words/phrases to record.
• Math scaffolds: give a pre-filled number line or part-whole diagram for each equation if needed; allow using price tags during calculations.
• Challenge for advanced learner: require the student to include a “what I changed” reflection sentence (e.g., “I revised my cost because I found that ___.”).
• Language support: offer a word bank (materials, cost, total, final price, because, equals) and sentence starters for each grouped section.

Extension (optional)

• Create a detailed pricing guide for one craft: include “cost breakdown,” “addition/subtraction totals,” and a suggested selling price rule (for example, “Selling price = total cost + $2”). The student also adds a small chart with three price options (budget, standard, and premium) and explains which one earns the most profit.
