Lesson Breakdown

1. Introduction & Objective Setting (5 Minutes)

• Briefly discuss the importance of grammar and vocabulary mastery for standardized tests like the ATI TEAS 7, focusing on the English section.
• Explain how precision in grammar (especially subject-verb agreement, modifiers, punctuation) and vocabulary understanding will enhance both writing and test performance.
• Review learning objectives explicitly with the student.

2. Grammar Focus Activities (20 Minutes)

a. Subject-Verb Agreement & Indefinite Pronouns (7 minutes)

• Present example sentences where subject-verb agreement is challenged by indefinite pronouns (e.g., Each of the students has a unique assignment).
• Use the memory trick: “Each is One” to reinforce singular verb usage.
• Activity: Have student create 3 sentences using different indefinite pronouns (each, everyone, neither) correctly paired with singular verbs.
• Review and correct where necessary.

b. Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers (8 minutes)

• Define and explain misplaced vs. dangling modifiers using examples:
• Misplaced modifier: "Extending their arms over the wall, the baseball players caught the balls..."
• Dangling modifier: "My brother had an old truck that sat by the garage that needed paint."
• Walk through the memory tricks to place modifiers correctly.
• Activity: Provide 2 sentences with misplaced/dangling modifiers and have the student rewrite them correctly.
• Discuss the importance of modifier placement for clarity.

c. Punctuation: Run-ons, Comma Splices, and Semicolons (5 minutes)

• Discuss run-on sentence errors and how to correct them with semicolons or conjunctions.
• Example: “The weather was beautiful; we went to the beach.”
• Explain comma splices vs. comma plus conjunction.
• Activity: Give the student a run-on sentence and ask for the correct punctuation fix.

3. Vocabulary & Context Clues (10 Minutes)

a. Prefixes and Suffixes (5 minutes)

• Introduce prefix "pre-" and suffix "-ism" with respective meanings and examples:
• pre- = before (premeditated)
• -ism = belief system or practice (optimism, capitalism)
• Activity: Ask the student to identify meanings of 2 new words with prefix or suffix from their everyday life or reading.

b. Word Meaning through Context Clues (5 minutes)

• Discuss words like “circumvent” (to go around) and “ambiguous” (unclear/double meaning).
• Teach how to use context in sentences to infer word meanings.
• Activity: Provide sentences using the word "lucid" and ask the student to explain its meaning using context clues.
• Emphasize real-life application for vocabulary mastery.
