Lesson Breakdown

1. Introduction and Warm-Up (10 minutes)

• Review blending sounds by segmenting and blending 2-3 words on the board using CCVC patterns (e.g., "plan," "shop," "chip").

2. Direct Instruction: Digraphs and Blends (15 minutes)

• Define and explain digraphs (sh, ch) and blends (e.g., bl, cr) with examples on board.
• Model decoding words with long vowels in multisyllabic words (e.g., "bake," "tree," "chime").
• Use a multisensory approach: Write words, say them aloud emphasizing the digraph/blend, and have students repeat.
• Introduce word families related to today’s patterns (e.g., -ack, -ight, -ash). Use sentence strips with partial words to snap in the rime or onset.

3. Guided Practice with Reading Passage (15 minutes)

• Distribute a short, age-appropriate reading passage that incorporates CCVC words, digraphs sh/ch, long vowels, and word families.
• Read the passage aloud with the class, pausing to decode challenging words together.
• As a group, underline or highlight words with target patterns.
• Use “Phonics Detective” magnifying glasses to find and circle target words in the text.

4. Comprehension and Application (10 minutes)
