Objective: Teach strategies to decompose multi-step word problems.
- Write a 2-step word problem on the board, e.g.:
"Lily has 3 boxes of pencils. Each box contains 12 pencils. She gives 15 pencils to her friend. How many pencils does Lily have left?"
- Model thinking aloud:
- Step 1: Multiply to find total pencils (3 × 12 = 36)
- Step 2: Subtract pencils given away (36 − 15 = 21)
- Show how to write an equation: (3 × 12) − 15 = ?
- Introduce using an array to visually represent the multiplication step: 3 rows (boxes) × 12 pencils per row. Use grid paper or draw on the board.
- Emphasize identifying key numbers and deciding operation order with the problem’s context.
3. Guided Practice with Arrays (15 minutes)
Objective: Use arrays and equations to solve multi-step problems collaboratively.
- Divide class into groups of 5.
- Give each group a multi-step word problem task card and grid paper plus counters.
- Example problem:
"A farmer has 5 fields. Each field has 8 rows of corn with 6 plants in each row. After harvest, he sells 100 plants. How many corn plants remain?"
- Instruct students to:
- Create arrays to model the multiplication steps (number of fields × rows × plants)
- Write corresponding equations (5 × 8 × 6 − 100 = ?)
