Million Dollar Words

Objectives

• Students will understand and identify types of "million dollar words" using FAAVS.
• Students will enhance their vocabulary by incorporating figurative language, vivid adjectives and adverbs, strong verbs, and sensory words into sentences.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• "Million Dollar Words" cards (pre-made with examples of FAAVS)
• Chart paper or large poster paper
• Markers or colored pencils
• Worksheet for each student

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Hook: Begin with a short story using bland, common words. Then, retell the story using rich, descriptive language, emphasizing "million dollar words."

2. Discussion: Ask the class which story they preferred and why. Highlight how word choice can change the feel and excitement of a story.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Introduce FAAVS:

   • Figurative Language: Similes, metaphors, personification
   • Adjectives That Sparkle: Describe color, size, shape, and emotions with vivid adjectives.
   • Adverbs That Shine: Modify verbs to add intensity or clarify how actions occur.
   • Verbs That Strengthen: Use strong, precise actions.
   • Sense Words That Sizzle: Engage the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) to create imagery.

2. Examples on Board: Write examples of each FAAVS category on the board and explain how they enhance writing, making it more engaging and precise.

Guided Practice (8 minutes)

1. Group Activity: Divide students into groups of four and give each group a set of "Million Dollar Words" cards. Each card should have examples labeled by FAAVS category.

2. Task: Ask groups to create a short, vivid paragraph using at least one word or phrase from each FAAVS category.

3. Discussion: Have groups share their paragraphs with the class. Discuss which million dollar words they used and how those words improved their writing.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

• Worksheet Activity: Distribute worksheets with sentences that need enhancing. Each sentence should have blank spaces where students can replace dull words with FAAVS words.

• Instructions: Students will rewrite the sentences, improving them by selecting appropriate "million dollar words" from a provided list.

Conclusion (2 minutes)

• Class Reflection: Ask students to share their favorite million dollar word from the lesson and why they think it improves a sentence.

• Homework: Encourage students to find and record at least three "million dollar words" they come across in their favorite books or during conversations at home.

Extension Activity
