Mindful Movement Fun

Lesson Overview

Subject: Physical Education (PE)
Unit: Mindful Movers: Earth Heroes
Lesson Number: 2 of 4
Lesson Duration: 30 minutes
Class Size: 16 students
Age Group: Kindergarten (Reception, EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stage)
Curriculum Link: EYFS Physical Development – Moving and Handling & Health and Self-care

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  • Develop movement skills through fun, interactive games.
  • Understand how their actions affect others and the environment.
  • Practise teamwork and personal responsibility in physical activities.
  • Demonstrate awareness of personal space and careful movement.

Resources Needed

  • Soft foam balls (1 per pair)
  • Cones or markers
  • Small beanbags or soft objects
  • Music (calm nature sounds for cool-down)

Lesson Breakdown

1. Welcome & Warm-Up (5 mins)

Objective: Get students moving and introduce mindful movement.

  • Game: Nature Walk Warm-Up
    • Ask students to move like different animals in a forest: 🦉 “Float like an owl”, 🐇 “Hop like a rabbit”, 🐜 “Crawl like an ant”.
    • Guide them to move carefully, thinking about how each movement affects the space around them.
    • Discuss: “How do we make sure we don’t bump into others? Why is it important to move safely?”

2. Main Activity: Responsibility & Teamwork Games (20 mins)

Game 1: Protect the Habitat! (10 mins)

Objective: Encourage personal responsibility and spatial awareness.

  • Set up small “habitats” using cones (one per pair).
  • Each pair gets a soft foam ball – this is their "wildlife" to protect.
  • The aim: Move around the space carefully while keeping their “wildlife” safe in their hands.
  • If they drop it or step into someone else’s space accidentally, they must pause and observe how to move more carefully next time.
  • Reinforce the idea: “Taking care of our space helps others – just like taking care of the Earth helps all living things.”

Game 2: The Helping Hands Relay (10 mins)

Objective: Reinforce teamwork and responsibility through movement.

  • Split students into small groups (4 per team).
  • Place a beanbag on one child’s back – they must walk carefully without dropping it.
  • If it falls, their teammates can help by suggesting careful movement adjustments (not picking it up for them!).
  • Children then discuss: “How did your friends help you? What happens when we don’t rush?”

3. Cool Down & Reflection (5 mins)

Objective: Encourage mindful relaxation and reinforce lesson themes.

  • Activity: Tree Breathing 🌳
    • Students stand still like trees, feet rooted into the ground.
    • Slowly raise their arms like growing branches while breathing in deeply.
    • Lower arms slowly while breathing out, imagining dropping leaves gently.
    • Discuss: “What did you learn today about moving carefully? How can we be responsible in the way we move?”

Assessment & Reflection

  • Observe students’ ability to move safely and considerately.
  • Listen to their responses during discussions – do they understand responsibility in movement?
  • Praise teamwork and mindful behaviours.

Teacher Notes

👩‍🏫 Differentiation:

  • For increased challenge: Introduce more obstacles to navigate around.
  • For additional support: Allow a peer buddy system for encouragement.

🎉 Engagement Tip:

  • Relate movements to real-world examples: “Imagine you’re protecting a tiny insect while walking!”
