Lesson Outline

1. Introduction & "I Can" Statements (5 minutes)

• Greet the class and introduce the theme: “Minding Your Business.”
• Present the "I can…" learning targets on the board.
• Read them aloud together with students to build ownership and clarity.

"I can..." Statements:

• I can understand personal boundaries and why they matter.
• I can respect other people’s privacy.
• I can show appropriate social behavior by minding my own business.
• I can think about how my choices affect others.

Success Criteria:

• I can listen actively to others during discussions.
• I can share examples of personal boundaries.
• I can explain why respecting privacy is important.
• I can act out social situations respectfully.

2. Mini-Reading & Group Discussion (15 minutes)

• Distribute dyslexia-friendly reading passages describing everyday examples of personal boundaries and respecting privacy (e.g., knocking before entering a room, not reading someone’s diary).
• Read aloud as a class (teacher models fluent, expressive reading).
• In pairs, students discuss guided questions:
  • What does “minding your business” mean here?
  • Why might someone feel upset if you don’t respect their privacy?
• Whole group shares ideas and teacher records key points on the chart paper under the three headings.

3. Role-Play Activity: Practice & Reflect (20 minutes)

• Divide students into groups of five.
• Give each group a role-play card describing typical situations (e.g., seeing a friend’s phone screen, overhearing a secret, asking personal questions).
• Groups practice role-playing the situation twice: once showing inappropriate behavior and once showing appropriate behavior.
• After performances, classmates give respectful feedback guided by questions:
  • Did they respect boundaries?
  • How did it feel for the person whose privacy they respected or didn’t respect?
• Teacher facilitates reflection and highlights key social behaviors.

4. Individual Reflection Journal (10 minutes)

• Students write a short reflection responding to prompts:
  • Describe a time you “minded your business” and what happened.
  • What’s one way you can respect others’ privacy this week?
  • How does minding your business help friendships?

• Gather students in a sharing circle. Invite volunteers to read a brief part of their reflection.

  • Challenge them to write a personal narrative or short opinion piece on why respecting privacy is important, using at least five new vocabulary words.
  • Optionally, create a short PSA (Public Service Announcement) poster or digital slide that promotes respecting personal boundaries.
• Summarize key takeaways and review “I can…” statements one last time.
