Multisyllable Word Detectives

Overview

Students use syllable patterns and meaningful word parts to decode and spell multisyllable words. They apply the strategy in a short informative response, organizing related information and revising one word for accurate spelling.

Lesson structure (15 minutes)

1. 0–2 min · Hook and goal. Display the question, “How can knowing a word’s parts help you read and spell it?” using the opening question slide. Students attempt to read the word unforgettable silently, then share one part they recognize.

2. 2–5 min · Model the strategy. Use the word-analysis strategy slides to model reading unforgettable: identify the prefix un-, divide the remaining word into syllables, blend each part, and confirm the meaning. Briefly model helpful and careless, emphasizing that meaningful parts can support both decoding and spelling. Students echo-read each word and identify its parts.

3. 5–8 min · Guided word practice. Display the three practice words on the guided-practice slide: replayful, inventor, and carelessness. Do not require students to know every word in advance; focus on applying the strategy. Students work in pairs, with one student marking syllable breaks and the other explaining a prefix, suffix, or spelling pattern. Each pair reads one word aloud while the teacher checks accuracy and prompts, “What part helped you?”

4. 8–12 min · Apply in writing. Distribute the multisyllable word decoding and writing worksheet. Students choose two target words from the worksheet and write a three-sentence informative response explaining how a person can become a “careful learner.” They introduce the topic, group related ideas in the middle sentences, and include a concluding statement. Students must use both target words accurately.

5. 12–14 min · Revise with a partner. Return to the revision checklist slide. Partners read each other’s responses and check for a clear topic, related information, a conclusion, and accurate spelling of the target words. Students circle one word they checked and revise it if needed.

6. 14–15 min · Plenary and exit check. Show the closing challenge slide and ask students to decode disagreement by identifying its meaningful parts and syllables. Each student writes the word with syllable breaks on the bottom of the final reflection box and completes the sentence, “The part that helped me most was…”

Assessment

• During guided practice, listen for accurate syllable division, blending, and explanations of prefixes or suffixes. Record which students need support with decoding or spelling.
• Review the written response for a clear topic, grouped related information, a conclusion, and correct use of two multisyllable target words.
• Use the final decoding challenge to identify whether students can transfer the strategy to a new word.

Differentiation

• Support students by pre-marking one syllable break, displaying the word parts in different colors, and providing the sentence frame: “I can read this word by separating ___ and ___.”
• Allow students who need additional support to orally rehearse their response before writing and work beside the teacher during guided practice.
• For multilingual learners, briefly clarify the meaning of each target word with a simple definition and gesture or visual; focus assessment on applying the strategy rather than prior vocabulary knowledge.
• Challenge advanced students to explain how the meaning changes when a prefix or suffix is added, or to include a third multisyllable word while maintaining clear organization.
