This is lesson 1 of 5 in the unit "Building Our Learning Community". Lesson Title: Names, Signals, and Shared Space Lesson Description: Students create name tags and labels, learn and practice the freeze signal through a brief game, and review bathroom procedures. They begin drafting a middle-school classroom promise focused on learning needs, kindness, shared space, and openness to new thinking. Objective: Students will explain and practice key classroom routines and contribute one idea to a collaborative promise. CCSS: SL.6.1, SL.6.6.
In the first lesson of the five-part “Building Our Learning Community” unit, students learn essential classroom routines and begin shaping a shared classroom promise. They practice introducing themselves, responding to a freeze signal, using shared spaces responsibly, and contributing an idea that supports learning and belonging.
Students will be able to:
0–5 min · Welcome and hook. Teacher greets students at the door, assigns seats, and displays the question, “What helps a classroom feel safe enough for people to learn and try new ideas?” using the opening question slide. Students write or quietly think of one condition they need in order to learn, then share with a nearby partner.
5–11 min · Names and labels. Teacher models making a readable name tag and labels common classroom materials or spaces; distribute the name, routine, and classroom promise sheet and explain that students may use their preferred name and pronunciation. Students create a name tag, add a pronunciation guide if useful, and label their assigned workspace or materials. Partners practice saying each other’s names respectfully.
11–18 min · Freeze signal practice. Teacher explains the freeze signal: stop moving, stop talking, face the teacher, and listen for the next direction. Model a clear response and a non-example, then use the freeze signal instruction slide. Students practice from seated and standing positions, followed by a brief “Freeze, Reset, Go” game in which students move safely on “go” and freeze on the signal. Teacher gives specific feedback on speed, safety, and readiness.
18–25 min · Bathroom procedure. Teacher explicitly teaches the bathroom routine, including when to ask, how to sign out or indicate location, walking expectations, time away from class, privacy, cleanliness, and what to do in an emergency. Use the bathroom procedure and scenario slides to present the steps and two brief scenarios. Students work with a partner to explain what they would do in each scenario, using the frame: “First I would ___ because ___.” Invite two or three pairs to share.
25–35 min · Drafting our classroom promise. Teacher introduces four focus areas—learning needs, kindness, shared space, and openness to new thinking—and posts the Group Discussion Poster as a discussion reminder. In groups of four, students assign a facilitator, recorder, reporter, and encourager. Each student completes the prompt on the classroom promise idea section: “Our classroom will be a better place for learning when we ___.” Groups take turns sharing, ask one clarifying question, and select one idea to report. Teacher records ideas on the board without finalizing the promise.
35–40 min · Share and exit check. Teacher invites group reporters to share one idea and briefly summarizes common themes, using the promise share-out and closing slides. Students complete the final worksheet reflection: name one routine they can explain and one action that would help classmates learn. Collect sheets as students leave.
