Lesson Objective
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and explain different types of natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods).
- Analyze the environmental, social, and economic impacts of natural disasters.
- Evaluate the role of human actions in mitigating or exacerbating natural disaster risks.
- Develop a brief disaster response plan for one specific type of disaster.

Lesson Plan Structure (90 Minutes)
1. Warm-Up Activity (10 Minutes) – Think-Pair-Share
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and set the stage for learning.
- Pose the question: "What is the worst natural disaster you have heard of? What made it so devastating?"
- Students write their responses on a sticky note and place them on a board labeled "Natural Disaster Experiences."
- Pair up students and have them discuss their responses before sharing a few examples with the class.
2. Direct Instruction (20 Minutes) – Explanation of Natural Disasters
Objective: Provide foundational knowledge on types of natural disasters.
- Presentation: Use a slideshow or video clips to introduce the six major types of natural disasters:
- Hydrological: Floods, tsunamis
- Meteorological: Tornadoes, hurricanes
- Geological: Earthquakes, volcanoes
- Wildfires: Forest and brush fires
- Discussion: For each disaster type, cover:
- Causes and contributing factors
- Regions most affected (with U.S. examples—e.g., hurricanes in Florida, wildfires in California, tornadoes in the Midwest)
- Immediate and long-term impacts on environment and society
3. Interactive Group Activity (30 Minutes) – Disaster Scenario Challenge
Objective: Apply knowledge to real-world problem-solving.

Step 1 – Assign Scenarios:
- Divide the class into six small groups (5 students per group). Each group is assigned a different disaster scenario (e.g., Category 5 hurricane striking New Orleans, a major earthquake in California).

Step 2 – Research & Response Plan (20 Minutes)
- Each group will brainstorm a disaster response plan, considering:
- Predicting and preparing for the disaster
- Immediate emergency response (Who responds? What resources do they need?)
- Long-term recovery efforts (How does the impacted region rebuild?)

Step 3 – Presentation (10 Minutes)
- Groups present their findings briefly (2-3 minutes each).
- The class votes on the most effective response plan based on preparedness, realism, and innovation.
4. Debrief & Reflection (15 Minutes) – "What If?" Scenarios
Objective: Encourage critical thinking on mitigation strategies.
- Discussion Prompt: "What if we had better technology, infrastructure, or policies in place? How could disaster impacts be minimized?"
- Compare real-world disaster responses in the U.S. (e.g., Hurricane Katrina vs. Hurricane Harvey) and lessons learned.
- Students individually write a one-paragraph exit reflection on how their local community could prepare for a natural disaster most relevant to their area.
Assessment & Evaluation

Differentiation Strategies
