Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Invitation and hook. Students compare the slide with their worksheet, identify one piece of information communicated more clearly by the table, and identify one detail available in their own direct observation but not represented in the table. Teacher asks, “Is the author’s purpose to entertain, persuade, or explain a scientific procedure?” Students justify “explain” with one feature of the text or slide.

  6. 26–30 min · Plenary and exit response. Teacher displays the review and exit-question slide and asks students to share one observation, one inference, and one reason scientists record evidence in an organized way. Students complete the final worksheet prompt: “Why must a scientist follow the steps in a procedure carefully?” They include one domain-specific term and hand in the worksheet.
