Lesson structure (30 minutes)

  1. 0–4 min · Hook: human number line. Teacher places benchmark cards labeled 0, 25,000, 50,000, 75,000, and 100,000 across the floor, opens the hook and benchmark number line slides, and asks, “Where would 60,000 go? How do you know?” Students stand near the position they estimate, then use a hand gesture for least, greatest, or between.

  2. 4–9 min · Direct teach: compare by place value. Teacher models ordering 45,100, 40,510, and 45,010 by comparing digits from left to right, emphasizing that the first different digit determines which number is greater.
