Overview

Students co-create a welcoming, safe, and organized classroom community while learning essential routines for collaboration, measuring, recording data, and solving length problems. Through a hands-on classroom design challenge, students practice listening, taking turns, using materials responsibly, and communicating mathematical thinking.

Lesson structure (240 minutes)

Students discuss and suggest behaviors that help everyone participate, such as taking turns, using quiet voices, and caring for materials. Each group shares two ideas; teacher combines repeated ideas into four or five clear “Our classroom community…” statements. Students help read the draft agreements aloud and give a thumbs-up, question, or suggested revision.

  4. 70–85 min · Movement and reset. Teacher leads a water, restroom, and movement break, then reteaches the signal and transition expectations. Students practice moving safely to and from the break and complete a brief stretch or “silent line-up” challenge. Teacher notices and names examples of cooperation without ranking students.

  5. 85–100 min · Measurement mini-lesson. They compare two objects using a sentence such as, “The ___ is ___ inches longer than the ___.” Teacher conferences with groups, asking, “How do you know?” and checks measurement technique, accurate recording, turn-taking, and safe use of tools. Groups switch roles halfway through.

  7. 145–165 min · Lunch, recess, and transition reset. Teacher previews the routines for leaving, returning, and restarting work. Students follow the class procedures, then silently review their group’s measurement records on return. Teacher briefly addresses any routine that needs reteaching.

  8. 165–195 min · Represent and solve. Teacher models transferring group measurements to a whole-class line plot marked in whole-number inches. Students add their group’s data, look for the most and least common lengths, and discuss what the plot shows. They complete the comparison and addition/subtraction questions on the data and length problem page, using drawings or equations when useful. Teacher revisits the draft agreements on the agreement and reflection slides and asks groups to connect one agreement to the investigation: “How did this behavior help us measure or learn?” Students jointly write one supporting reason for a class agreement and suggest one practical action, such as returning rulers to a labeled bin or using a quiet signal during group work. Groups share; teacher records final class agreements and students sign or place a name mark beside the shared plan.

  10. 220–240 min · Reflection and exit assessment. Teacher leads a brief circle reflection: “What routine helped us today?” and “What will you practice tomorrow?” Students complete the final section of the reflection and exit ticket, including one measured length, one comparison sentence, and one community commitment. Students clean their work areas using the materials routine, return tools, and line up when the teacher confirms the room is ready.
