Part 2-Lesson Plan

At the end of this specific port, students should be able to:

Create problems (LU1-103)

Identify an example of conceptual reasoning, procedural fluency and strategic competence in a Mathematics textbook (LU2-103, 106, 109, 1012);

Describe some strategies to promote productive disposition in Intermediate Phase South African Mathematics classrooms (LU2-1014);

Describe some of the ways in which teachers can respond to diversity through the curriculum. (LU3-103);

Formulate ways of 'differentiating the learning environment' to make Mathematics more occessible to intermediate Phase learners (LU3-LOS);

Develop a differentiated Mathematics lesson for Grade 7 learners (LUB-108);

Demonstrate the progression of conceptual complexity by designing a series of activities on the same topic (LU4-102, 104, LOG, LOB). In your first teaching post as a Grade 7 teacher, the Head of Mathematics asks you to plan a differentiated learning unit based on problem-solving in the content area of Numbers, Operations and Relationships. This will be a unit consisting of three lessons that you will share with the other Grade 7 Mathematics teachers. You consulted CAPS and recognised that you could select any of the following to be the focus of the lesson:

Solving problems involving whole numbers, percentages, and decimal fractions in financial contexts (DBE, 2011: 14).

Solving problems in contexts involving numbers in exponential form (DBE, 2011:15)

Solving problems in contexts involving addition and subtraction with integers (DBE, 2011: 16). I

Solving problems in contexts involving common fractions and mixed numbers, including grouping, sharing and finding fractions of whole numbers (DBE, 2011: 17).

The school is under-resourced, so you will have to be creative with the design of your teaching and learning support materials. Approximately a third of the learners' home language is not the same as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT), which is English. Each of the Grade 7 classes has learners who are gifted, and learners who experience Mathematics Anxiety. You will need to show how these diverse learning needs can be met within your differentiated lesson plan. Use the IIE lesson plan template. The lesson unit will take place over 3 days, therefore, you need only complete the first part of the lesson plan once (A-G), thereafter, Section H of the lesson plan template should be repeated three times (3 lessons):

Informal assessment should take place in every lesson. Day 3 should include a formal assessment activity in which you will assess whether the unit plan's objectives were achieved. Remember that you will need to differentiate the assessment.

In your lesson plan, you should label sections according to which strand/strands of mathematics proficiency they target, according to Kilpatrick et al. (2001).

Lesson 1: Financial Contexts and Whole Numbers

Introductory Phase

Time: 10 Minutes
Objective: Engage students and activate prior knowledge

  • Greet students and introduce the lesson focus: financial decisions using whole numbers.
  • Ask: "What are some financial decisions you make weekly?" Record responses.
  • Quick group activity: in pairs, have students list at least five situations where they use whole numbers in finances.
