Overview

Students use the RACE strategy—Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain—to respond to a short technical question about a technology procedure. They will identify precise evidence, interpret a simple data table, and write a concise evidence-based explanation.

Lesson structure (7 minutes)

  1. 0–1 min · Hook and purpose. Open with the hook and learning target slides and display the question, “Why should a technician test a circuit before installing it in a device?” Students silently predict one reason and prepare to justify it.

  2. 1–2 min · Model RACE. Use the RACE strategy model slide to introduce Restate, Answer, Cite, and Explain; model how the sentence stem “The technician should…” turns the question into a response. Students repeat the four steps and identify which step requires evidence.

  3. 2–3 min · Read the technical text. Distribute the circuit-testing RACE worksheet and direct students to read the short procedure and data table, focusing on the exception that testing must stop if the meter displays an overload warning. Students underline one procedure detail and circle one relevant data value.

  4. 3–5 min · Partner response.
