Sacrificing Obedience

Overview

Students analyze how a theme develops in a narrative text, focusing on Saul’s impulsive choice to prioritize ritual over Divine will. They also practice objective summarizing and use grammar and word-meaning skills to clarify their thinking as they plan a short informational paragraph.

Learning intentions

• Students will determine the central theme of a text about Saul and explain how it develops.
• Students will write an objective summary that avoids opinions and keeps the main events in order.
• Students will use context clues to determine the meaning of key words and phrases, including figurative or connotative meaning.
• Students will revise sentences by correcting misplaced or dangling modifiers so the meaning is clear.
• Students will organize writing with a clear introduction and preview of what follows.

Lesson structure (38 minutes)

1. 0–4 min · Retrieval hook. Teacher posts two sentences from a prior lesson’s discussion (Saul’s urgency and consequences) and asks students to choose the one that best matches an objective summary style; students do a quick think-write and share 1 reason.
2. 4–10 min · Read for theme + evidence. Teacher reads (or students read) the assigned passage titled “Saul’s Quick Fix: Sacrificing Obedience,” then models coding for theme statements and evidence markers; students annotate with 2 symbols: one for “theme clue” and one for “evidence.”
3. 10–17 min · Theme development discussion. Teacher asks: “What is the central idea about leadership and obedience? How does the story build toward it?” Students complete a short theme evidence table: Theme claim (1 sentence) and two supporting events (each 1 sentence).
4. 17–24 min · Word meaning + repetition impact mini-check. Teacher introduces 3–4 target words/phrases from the text (e.g., “quick fix,” “ritual,” “obedience,” “Divine will,” and any repeated wording), asking students to explain meanings using context; students also identify one instance of repetition and explain its effect on mood or emphasis in a 2–3 sentence response.
5. 24–30 min · Grammar sprint (modifiers). Teacher displays two sentences from student models (or teacher-made examples) containing misplaced/dangling modifiers, such as “After the ritual, Saul was told by Samuel,” and “Running to the altar, the sacrifice was hurried,” then asks what seems unclear and how to fix it; students rewrite both sentences with clearer placement.
6. 30–38 min · Writing: objective summary + organized intro. Teacher models a paragraph plan: Opening sentence that introduces the topic and previews what follows; body that uses cause/effect to connect Saul’s action to consequences; final sentence that restates the theme without opinions. Students write a 6–8 sentence paragraph including:

• an objective summary (no “Saul was wrong/bad” statements),
• one sentence explaining theme development using evidence,
• one sentence that uses cause/effect language,
• and a final sentence with a theme restatement. Teacher collects paragraphs.

Assessment

• Teacher circulates during annotation to check that students can label theme clues and evidence (formative).
• Students’ theme evidence tables and word-meaning responses are reviewed for accuracy and use of context (formative).
• Collected 6–8 sentence paragraphs are scored with a quick rubric: objective summary accuracy, theme evidence, cause/effect clarity, and two correct modifier revisions.

Differentiation

• Provide sentence starters for theme claims (“The central idea is that…,” “This theme develops when…”), objective summaries (“First… Next… After that…”), and cause/effect (“Because Saul…, the result was…”).
• Offer a partially completed theme evidence table for students who need structure, and allow them to add only one additional event as support.
• For advanced students, require an added line about how repeated wording affects emphasis, and ask for one additional revision that improves sentence clarity beyond modifier correction.
• For EAL/SEN supports, pre-teach the target words with simple definitions and visuals (ritual = repeated ceremony; obedience = doing what you are told to do), and allow oral rehearsal before writing.
