Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook: Who needs science? They identify the question, independent variable, measured outcome, evidence, possible uncontrolled variables, and conclusion. Groups must write one evidence-based explanation using the frame: “The evidence suggests ___ because ___.” Assign roles of reader, evidence finder, discussion leader, and reporter so all students participate.

  5. 31–38 min · Scientific methods matter. Teacher displays the methods-matter discussion prompts and asks groups to discuss: “What could happen if scientists do not control variables, record measurements carefully, repeat trials, or report limitations?” Students complete the final section of the worksheet and prepare one explanation connecting a method to trustworthy results. Invite two or three groups to share; classmates identify the evidence used.

  6. 38–45 min · Plenary and exit check. Teacher returns to the opening question using the closing reflection slide and asks students to revise or extend their first response. Students complete the worksheet exit response: “Science is important in ___ because scientists use ___ to ___.” Collect responses to assess understanding and identify misconceptions.
