Self-Check for Entrepreneurship

Overview

In this lesson, students evaluate personal traits and motivations that support entrepreneurship. They will read like analysts, identify a central idea from short informational text, and then write a focused informative response about whether entrepreneurship fits them.

Learning intentions

Students will be able to:

• Determine a central idea of an informational text and explain how it develops using specific details.
• Analyze how supporting details shape the central idea.
• Write an informative paragraph that introduces a topic, develops it with relevant facts/examples, and clearly explains their reasoning.

Success criteria

• I can state the central idea of the mentor text in one or two sentences.
• I can point to 2–3 details and explain how those details help shape the central idea.
• I can write an informative paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting evidence, and a concluding statement.
• I can use an objective tone when describing traits and evidence (not just opinions).

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Warm-up prompt. Teacher displays the prompt: “Which trait do you think matters most for entrepreneurship: creativity, persistence, leadership, risk-taking, or curiosity? Why?” Students quick-write 3–4 sentences to activate prior knowledge.

2. 5–12 min · Mentor text mini-read. Teacher gives a short informational passage on common entrepreneurial traits (1–2 pages max) and models reading with a central-idea lens. Students underline one sentence that feels like the “main point,” then identify 2 supporting details.

3. 12–20 min · Central idea analysis. Teacher leads a brief whole-class discussion: “What is the central idea, and how does it emerge and get refined through details?” Students complete a simple organizer: Central idea + three evidence bullets, each linked to “how it shapes/refines the idea.”

4. 20–28 min · Objective summary practice. Teacher models an objective summary (no “I think” statements). Students write a 3–4 sentence objective summary of the mentor text using evidence they identified.

5. 28–40 min · Personal readiness reflection (guided). Teacher distributes a readiness checklist with 5 guided questions aligned to the text’s trait categories, such as: “When faced with uncertainty, what do you do first?” “How do you respond to feedback?” “What motivates you to create or improve something?” Students answer using short, specific examples from school, clubs, sports, or daily life.

6. 40–47 min · Write: Informative paragraph. Teacher provides a paragraph structure: Topic sentence (answer the readiness question), two body sentences using evidence from mentor text + one from their reflection, and a conclusion (balanced and evidence-based). Students draft their paragraph, using the checklist and the central-idea organizer as scaffolds.

7. 47–50 min · Exit ticket. Teacher collects an exit ticket with two items: (1) “Central idea of today’s mentor text in one sentence,” (2) “One trait that supports entrepreneurship for you, with one example.” Students submit before leaving.

Assessment

• Formative checks during discussion: students’ underlined central-idea candidate and evidence details (teacher circulates and asks clarifying questions).
• Organizer review: students connect specific details to how they develop the central idea.
• Exit ticket: verifies central idea accuracy and evidence-based trait reasoning.
• Paragraph collection: checks clarity of topic, use of relevant facts/examples, and objective explanatory tone.

Differentiation

• Support: Provide sentence starters for the organizer (“The central idea is…,” “This detail matters because…”). Offer a word bank for trait categories (persistence, initiative, adaptability, curiosity, leadership).
• Support: Allow students to complete the readiness checklist using bullet points before drafting.
• Extension: Challenge students to include counterevidence or limits (e.g., “This trait helps me, but I will need to improve…”), while still keeping the paragraph informative and evidence-based.
• EAL/SEN: Provide an annotated mentor-text version with highlighted key sentences; allow audio reading or partner reading; offer a simplified outline while preserving the required structure and evidence use.
