Sentence Building Fun

Lesson Outline

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Greeting and Warm-up Activity
   Begin with a quick greeting and ask students how they are feeling today. Write example sentences on the board: "I am happy," "She is excited," "They are ready for class."

2. Objective Introduction
   Explain to students that today they will learn how to use "am," "is," and "are" to form sentences. Discuss the importance of using correct verb forms to express the present tense.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Teaching the Use of "Am," "Is," "Are"

   • Write on the board:
     • "I am" - used when the speaker is talking about themselves.
     • "He/She/It is" - used when talking about a single person, animal, or thing.
     • "We/You/They are" - used when talking about multiple people or things.

2. Examples

   • I am a student.
   • She is a teacher.
   • They are friends.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Sentence Completion Activity

   • Distribute handouts with sentence fragments missing "am," "is," or "are."
   • Ask students to complete the sentences individually or in pairs. Example fragments:
     • "He ___ playing soccer."
     • "We ___ at school."
     • "It ___ a sunny day."

2. Share Responses
   Invite volunteers to read their completed sentences to the class. Correct any errors and discuss why the chosen verb is correct.

Group Activity (10 minutes)

1. Sentence Building Relay

   • Divide the class into small groups or pairs.
   • Provide each group with strips of paper and markers.
   • Each strip will have a subject (e.g., "The cat," "My friends," "I") and groups need to add "am," "is," or "are" to complete the sentence on construction paper.
   • Encourage creativity, e.g., adding adjectives or more information to make their sentences fun and interesting.

2. Presentations

   • Groups share their sentences with the class.
   • Display completed sentences around the room.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Review and Recap

   • Recap the lesson by highlighting examples from the students and reinforcing the rules for choosing "am," "is," and "are."
   • Quick verbal quiz with questions like "What verb would you use with 'She'?" or "What verb goes with 'I'?"

2. Exit Ticket
   Have students write one original sentence using am, is, or are in their notebooks to demonstrate their understanding.
