Objective

Students will be able to identify and write four types of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory, recognizing their functions and appropriate punctuation.

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Warm-Up: Begin with a quick discussion on what sentences are. Ask students to share what they know about sentences.
2. Objective Overview: Introduce the objective of the lesson: identifying and writing different types of sentences.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Sentence Types Overview:

   • Declarative: A sentence that makes a statement.
     • Example: "The cat sat on the mat."
   • Interrogative: A sentence that asks a question.
     • Example: "Where is my book?"
   • Imperative: A sentence that gives a command or request.
     • Example: "Please pass the salt."
   • Exclamatory: A sentence that shows strong emotion.
     • Example: "Wow, that’s amazing!"

2. Sentence Posters: Display and discuss the Sentence Type Posters visually illustrating examples of each sentence type with appropriate punctuation.

3. Interactive Practice:

   • Write example sentences on the board for each type.
   • Ask students to identify the type of sentence and function.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Sentence Sorting Activity:

   • Hand out Sentence Sorting Cards to small groups of students.
   • Ask them to work together to sort the cards into categories: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory.

2. Class Discussion:

   • Discuss the sorting results as a class.
   • Highlight any sentences that were challenging and clarify misconceptions.

Independent Practice (12 minutes)

1. 'Sentence Detective' Handout:

   • Distribute the handout, which contains a short paragraph.
   • Students act as “sentence detectives” to identify and label the sentence types within the paragraph.

2. Sentence Creation:

   • Ask students to write their own examples of each type of sentence.

Closure (5 minutes)

1. Review Key Concepts:

   • Quickly review the four types of sentences and their functions.

2. Students Share:

   • Have a few students share their sentences aloud with the class.

3. Reflection:

   • Ask students what they found interesting or challenging about today's lesson.
