Create a visually appealing collage using an assortment of 2-D shapes (K.GSR.8.1).
Explain the types of shapes used in their collage, describing attributes such as number of sides and vertices (K.GSR.8.1).
Use shape patterns and arrangements creatively to express personal ideas and stories (K.PAR.6).
Collaborate effectively with peers, discussing their shape choices and listening respectfully to others’ choices (K.MP.3, K.MP.6).

Materials Needed

Pre-cut 2-D shape paper cutouts: circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, hexagons (multiple colors and sizes)
Glue sticks
Large white construction paper (collage base)
Shape name labels (words and visual icons)
Magnifying glasses (optional for detail observation)
Chart paper and markers for group discussion
Smartboard/projector for visual examples
Pattern blocks (for kinesthetic exploration)

Instructional Procedures

1. Introduction & Review (0-10 min)

Begin with an interactive shape flashcard game on the board, asking students to identify shape names, sides, and corners.
Prompt them to think about how these shapes can be put together to tell a story or make a picture.
Ask the essential question aloud to set the stage for the activity.

2. Shape Exploration and Sorting (10-25 min)

Provide each pair of students with a set of mixed shape cutouts and shape labels.
Encourage sorting by different attributes (color, shape, size). Use thinking aloud to model observations (“I see that the triangles have three sides...”).
Supply magnifying glasses to highlight and celebrate shape details.

3. Shape Collage Creation (25-45 min)

Students use glue sticks to arrange and paste shapes onto their collage paper.
Encourage creative combinations such as stacking triangles to form a house roof or combining circles to make a caterpillar.
Circulate to assist students in naming shapes and reinforcing vocabulary.

4. Peer Sharing and Explanation (45-55 min)

Organize students into groups of 4-5 for sharing.
Encourage each student to describe their collage focusing on the shapes they used and why.
Peers ask questions like “How many triangles did you use?” or “What do you like about your friend’s collage?”
Teacher captures exemplary language on chart paper for all to see.

5. Wrap-Up & Reflection (55-60 min)

Lead a brief class reflection linking to the essential question, emphasizing shapes as tools for creativity.
Use an exit ticket for quick assessment: Students draw one shape from today’s lesson and verbalize one way that shape was used in their collage.

Differentiation Strategies
