Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Notice and wonder. Teacher opens the hook and notice-and-wonder slide showing a mixed collection of colorful classroom objects and asks, “How could we organize these?” Students silently observe, then share one thing they notice with a partner. Accept multiple possible sorting ideas without confirming a single answer.

  5. 33–40 min · Gallery share and compare. Teacher asks pairs to leave their sorting display visible and leads students through a short gallery walk using the gallery-walk question slides. Students visit two displays, identify each pair’s rule, and compare category counts using “more,” “fewer,” or “same.” Invite two pairs who used different rules to sort similar objects to explain how both solutions work.

  6. 40–45 min · Exit check and close. Teacher displays the closing challenge slide with three new pictured objects and asks students to suggest one sorting rule. Students complete the final box on the object-sorting recording sheet by drawing or verbally explaining how they would sort the pictured objects. Close by reinforcing that careful observers can classify the same objects in more than one reasonable way.
