CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1
Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.D: Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes):
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.A: Recognize and produce rhyming words.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.C: Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (CVC) words.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.D: Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.A: Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.C: Read common high-frequency words by sight.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify letter sounds for all consonants taught during the year (focus on 5 consonants for this lesson: /m/, /s/, /t/, /a/, /p/).
- Blend individual sounds to form simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words (e.g., mat, sat, tap).
- Recognize and read common sight words ("the," "and," "a").
- Participate in interactive activities that develop phonemic awareness and word recognition.
Materials
- Flashcards with letters m, s, t, a, p and corresponding picture (e.g., m - moon)
- Letter sound song (audio or teacher-led)
- Magnetic letter sets for each student or table group
- Whiteboard and markers
- Sight word cards ("the," "and," "a")
- Letter blending board (large magnetic board or printed mat)
- Small individual dry-erase boards and markers (optional for practice)
- Simple picture cards for matching sound activities
Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-Up and Review (5 minutes)
Activity: Letter Sound Song and Movement
- Play or sing a fun, repetitive letter sound song that includes the focus letters (/m/, /s/, /t/, /a/, /p/).
- Use hand motions or gestures representing each letter sound to engage students physically.
- Encourage all students to sing and move along to activate their auditory and kinesthetic learning.
Purpose: To activate prior knowledge and reinforce letter-sound associations.
2. Introduction to Letter Sounds (10 minutes)
Activity: Flashcard Sound Hunt
- Show flashcards one at a time for each target letter.
- Pronounce the letter sound clearly and have the class repeat it several times.
- Display a picture on the flashcard and identify the beginning sound ("m" is for moon, "s" is for sun).
- Play a quick “sound hunt” game: ask students to find the magnetic letter that matches the sound on their table or in the classroom.
Purpose: Reinforce letter-sound recognition and support auditory discrimination, aligned with phonics standards.
3. Blending Sounds into Words (15 minutes)
Activity: Interactive Blending Board
- Introduce the concept of blending individual sounds to make CVC words.
- Model blending sounds using magnetic letters on the board: for example, /m/ /a/ /t/ → "mat."
- Have students practice blending sounds orally as well as by arranging magnetic letters themselves.
- In pairs or small groups, students create three target words from the given letters (mat, sat, tap).
- Support students who need extra help by guiding sound segmentation and blending aloud.
Purpose: Develop phonemic blending skills critical for decoding, in alignment with CCSS phonics skills.
4. Sight Word Recognition (8 minutes)
Activity: Sight Word Chant and Sorting
- Introduce three common sight words for the lesson: "the," "and," "a."
- Teach students to recognize these words by sight using large flashcards.
- Lead a chant clapping rhythmically while spelling the sight words aloud together.
- Play a sorting game: mix the sight word cards with nonsense words or CVC words; students identify and separate the sight words.
- Encourage students to use the words in a short shared sentence.
Purpose: Build automatic recognition of high-frequency words as required by the Common Core standards.
5. Hands-On Practice and Wrap-Up (7 minutes)
Activity: Letter Sound Bingo
- Provide students with Bingo cards featuring the focus letters and simple pictures representing those sounds.
- Call out sounds or words, and students cover the corresponding letter or picture.
- Celebrate winners and review which sounds and words were part of the game.
- End with a quick, whole-class review of one or two favorite new words blended or sight words learned.
Purpose: Reinforce learning through a playful formative assessment, encouraging motivation and confidence.
Assessment
- Formative checks during blending activities: observe student ability to segment and blend sounds.
- Sight word sorting accuracy during the interactive activity.
- Informal observations during sound hunt and bingo to gauge individual letter-sound recognition.
- Teacher anecdotal notes on participation and response accuracy.
Differentiation
- Provide extra scaffolding with one-on-one support during blending for students struggling with phonemic awareness.
- Offer additional challenging words for advanced learners using the same letters for more complex blends.
- Use multisensory approaches (touch, movement, visuals) for diverse learning preferences.
Reflection and Next Steps
- Note which students quickly grasped blending and sight word recognition and who needs reinforcement.
- Plan subsequent lessons to introduce more letters and sight words, building on this foundational phonics work.
- Incorporate family communication suggesting fun, at-home phonics activities to reinforce today's lesson.
This lesson is designed to engage young learners through multisensory, playful, and interactive methods rooted strictly in Common Core guidelines for foundational reading skills.
