Description

(SEP) Students watch a video about parent and offspring sounds. They reenact what they view through a quick activity in which they take on the role of parent or offspring.

Materials Reusable

1 Short video, found through an internet search engine, of different animals communicating with their young (per class). Try searching for “Mother cat talks to kittens.”

Procedure and Facilitation Points Show the video to the students. After the video, answer the following questions. How did the parent communicate or “talk” to their offspring (babies)? They made noises. How did the babies respond to the parents? The babies made different noises or gestures. Can we communicate without talking? Yes, we can make noises, gesture, or use facial expressions. Have students brainstorm animal sounds. As they come up with the sounds, record them on the board by writing the animal and what sound it makes. Extension: guide students to come up with the harder sounds. Explain how animal parents and babies have to use sounds to locate each other and communicate their needs. Then, separate the class into “parent animals” and “baby animals.” Assign, and whisper if necessary, a different sound word from the list to each parent animal. Then tell a student in the baby group the same word. When everyone is assigned a sound, students begin making their sounds. The parents are trying to find their babies (offspring). Continue until all parents have found their offspring. Discuss as a class, or have students write in their science journals: (CCC) What did you have to do to find your parent or offspring? I had to make a specific noise or word. Possible sentence starter: I found my parent or offspring by _____________. (CCC) Was it difficult to find your parent or offspring? If so, why? Answers will vary; some sounds sound the same; there were many sounds all at once. Possible sentence starter: I had an easy (or hard) time finding my parent (or offspring), because ___________. Discuss as a class how being in a large group is different from being in a small group (e.g., birthday party or the mall). Would animals that live in herds or large groups have the same problem? Yes, because they could get separated or leave to get food and have to find their baby in a large group. Connection to the Investigative Phenomena Once students have completed the activity, have them refer to the Investigative Phenomena question, anchor their learning, and revise their thinking.
