Startup Pitfalls

Overview

Students will identify and classify common reasons startups fail, then use evidence from a short informational text to explain how a central idea develops. They will apply those insights to a focused writing task and a clear speaking presentation of mitigation strategies.

Learning intentions

• Students will be able to determine a central idea of an informational text about startup failure.
• Students will be able to analyze how that central idea is shaped and refined by specific details.
• Students will be able to write an objective summary of the text.
• Students will be able to develop a topic using relevant, sufficient facts and examples.
• Students will be able to present findings clearly and logically.

• I can state the text’s central idea in one sentence.
• I can explain how key details build the central idea using evidence.
• I can write an objective summary that does not include my opinions.
• I can present a mitigation plan using clear reasoning and supporting evidence.

• Reading informational text: Determine a central idea, analyze development with specific details, and write an objective summary (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.2).

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

1. 0–6 min · Hook & connection. Teacher displays 3 pitfall categories on the board (Market, Money, Team/Operations) and asks students to list one pitfall they’ve seen in school, sports, online businesses, or family situations. Students jot 1–2 examples on a sticky note and place it under the closest category.

2. 6–12 min · Mini-lesson: “central idea in context.” Teacher briefly models how authors build a central idea using details (claim → examples → outcomes) and shows what “objective summary” sounds like. Students highlight the text’s “big message” sentence and underline evidence words (e.g., “because,” “for example,” “results,” “leads to”).

3. 12–25 min · Read, annotate, and classify. Teacher distributes a short informational passage titled “Common Reasons Startups Fail” and assigns a two-part task: identify central idea and map supporting details to the three pitfall categories. Students annotate in pairs:

• Write the central idea in the margin.
• Label each supporting detail with Market/Money/Team/Operations.
• Circle at least two details they will use later in a summary.

4. 25–35 min · Objective summary writing (draft). Teacher explains the structure: sentence 1 = central idea; sentence 2–3 = how details develop it; closing sentence = brief wrap-up without opinions. Students write a 4–5 sentence objective summary using only information from the passage, not personal judgments.

5. 35–43 min · Pitfall mitigation quickwrite (topic development). Teacher prompts: “Choose one pitfall category and propose two mitigation strategies supported by text details.” Students complete a short paragraph with this organization:

• Topic sentence naming the pitfall category
• Two well-chosen strategies with facts/details from the passage
• One example of what a founder could do next Teacher circulates and checks for relevance and sufficient evidence.

6. 43–49 min · Share-out with evidence. Teacher sets a timer for 2-minute shares and provides a sentence frame to keep reasoning clear: “The central idea is ___. The text shows this through ___. A strategy to reduce this pitfall is ___ because __.” Students present in small groups or as volunteers; peers listen for evidence-based statements and quick clarity.

7. 49–50 min · Exit ticket. Teacher collects:

• Central idea (one sentence)
• One supporting detail they labeled (copy or paraphrase)
• One mitigation strategy (one sentence)

Assessment

• During reading: teacher checks that students correctly identify details and label them by category.
• During writing: review objective summary for central idea clarity and objective tone; check mitigation paragraph for sufficient, relevant facts/examples.
• Exit ticket: confirms each student can state central idea, cite a detail, and propose an evidence-based strategy.

Differentiation

• Support: Provide sentence starters for central idea (“The text mainly explains…”) and objective summary (“The author describes… because…”) plus an evidence bank of key phrases from the passage.
• Support: Offer a partially completed graphic organizer with one example detail already mapped, so students finish the remaining labels.
• EAL/SEN: Allow students to underline evidence first, then paraphrase using a word bank; offer an audio read-aloud of the passage if needed.
• Extension: Students choose a second pitfall category and add one additional strategy, explicitly connecting it to a new detail from the text.
