Overview

This 45-minute lesson introduces seventh-grade students to technology’s presence and influence in their daily lives. Students will explore different categories of technology, reflect on their personal experiences, and understand technology's societal impact—all aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Reading, Speaking & Listening, and Writing.

• Chart paper or whiteboard
• Markers
• Technology scenario cards (prepared in advance, examples: smartphone, electric car, online education platform)
• Student notebooks or digital devices for writing

Lesson Timeline

1. Hook & Introduction (7 minutes)

• Activate prior knowledge: Ask students, "What comes to mind when you hear the word 'technology'?" Write responses on the board.
• Brief definition: Explain that technology refers to tools, machines, and systems created to solve problems or enhance life.
• Objective sharing: Read aloud the learning objectives to set purpose.

2. Exploration Activity: Technology Categories (10 minutes)

• Divide the board into four sections: Communication, Transportation, Healthcare, Education.
• Hand out technology scenario cards to pairs of students.
• Each pair identifies which category their technology fits and explains why.
• Volunteers place their cards on the board and share their reasoning with the class.
• Teacher prompts discussion about how these technologies affect daily life and society.

3. Group Discussion: Personal Technology Experiences (12 minutes)

• Divide the class into 3 groups of 5.
• Each group discusses these questions:
  • What is your favorite technology and why?
  • How has technology changed how you learn, play, or connect with others?
  • Can technology have negative effects? Give examples.
• Encourage students to build on others’ ideas and listen respectfully, following SL.7.1c & d with norms of discussion.
• Groups appoint a spokesperson to summarize main points.

4. Writing Activity: Impact of Technology (10 minutes)

• Using notes from the discussion, students individually write a short explanatory paragraph identifying one piece of technology and describing its positive and/or negative impact on society.
• Remind students to use clear, informative language as per W.7.2.

5. Wrap-Up & Exit Ticket (6 minutes)

• Select 3-4 students at random to share their paragraphs aloud.
• Exit Ticket Prompt (written on board): "Name one way technology has changed your daily life and why it matters."
• Students write and hand in this response before leaving.

Assessment & Feedback

• Informal assessment through observation of student engagement during discussions and card activity.
• Formal assessment based on the written paragraph and exit ticket, checking understanding of technology’s role and clarity in explanation as per CCSS.
• Provide individualized feedback highlighting strengths in ideas, use of evidence or examples, and writing clarity.
